Trigger Guard discussion

I am of the mind that the trigger guard on the hero gun is purely custom. I've handled the steyr guns before and the trigger guard is plastic, while the hero gun clearly has a metal trigger guard.

Could it be as simple as the prop master cut, bent, sanded and finished a chunk of steel?

Yeah quite possible actually. One of my first attempts at recreating the blaster, I used an old drawer pull that I cut and filed for the trigger guard. So yeah it could be a found item that was re-purposed.

Here is my comparison pic of the guards off of different Guns...

It bears some resembleance to the Coyle which was fasioned off of the Steyr guard, similar thick and thin points. It could have been cut down and molded off of.

I don't have my other references handy to show the other things that made me believe it was the source for the hero guard, but one of them was a dimple near the back against the grip that is also on the steyr as part of clearance for a screw. It may just be something that was only on Rich Coyle's version though and not the Hero.

The trigger guard seems to be convex not flat.

Could it be hand forged out of a piece of steel?

Well, here are some shots of the steyr SL trigger guard. According to the "myth" the gunsmith did have one of these to work from, so maybe he cast it and then modified the living crap out of it in some way.

But wouldn't it have been a foundry cast if it's steel?

The Steyr also has a seam along the center on teh inside of teh trigger guard.

I MAY HAVE FOUND IT!!

I was searching for trigger guards for a hero steampunk pistol and came across a number of photos of an old japanese surplus rifle.










What I've found so far researching japanese surplus rifles like this is that the guard are incredible inconsistant. They don't seem to be the same thickness (width wide) every time, or even have the exact bend every time.

Some of them cost $50, some of them cost $4000.

I'm still working on the research though.

I sent the pics to a gunsmith friend of mine in Tampa and he said:

"They never made the same one twice on those, some are VERY thick, others are very thin, and the finish is never quite the same either."

But he will keep an eye out for the thin kind for us, and will let me know if he recognizes any other parts (like the sight rod) too.

I am thinking less and less that it is based off of the Steyr Guard, and that second Japanese Guard does look close for sure, but what about the cross section? Is it more ovoid, convex or flat and just thicker at the points where it is bent? This may just have to be recreated another way.

Well, so far the further research I've done on this trigger guard tells me this is probably too wide. My guess would be twice as wide as the hero blaster's trigger guard.

I'm still working on it though. The Arisaka rifles came in a wide variety of types, so I'm still researching.

Hirohawa, please post some pics when you get yours, and let us know if you think maybe one was trimmed in width. I'm doubting that, but you never know.
