Posted: Fri Mar 06, 2009 7:23 am Post subject: 1:1 Spinner light project. V2 FINISHED, WITH NEW VID |
|
|
Been thinking about having a complete replica of the rooftop spinner lights for a while now and while looking for something completely different, came across this little treasure...........
It was listed as a vintage police light cover,6.5 inches and is absolutely perfect to get the project started, if i can somehow make clones of this.
I already have some cheapo rotating 12 volt hazard lights and can easily
put together the red, white and blue rectangular lights under the teardrops
using 2nd hand fog lamps.
What i need is some advice on is the processes available to reproduce this light, can this be done the same way pill packaging is done, using the same thin plastic?
Also, has anyone ever worked with clear colour spray paint, is it effective?
One option is to use lighting gel to colour the covers but a spray job would look better. Any help would be appreciated. _________________ Formerly offworld66

Tim, forget spray-painting those suckers; application is a bitch (splotches of different tones). Could be vacu-formed with the proper coloured plastic (as seen in your picture). Good luck. |

Thanks for the tip joberg,
Just found these new designs and they blew me away, all the work done
in a ready to go unit and reasonably cheap as well.
Cant wait till i can get some of these and get stuck in to the lightbar.
They also come in blue and red and are 12volt so hooking them all up together with some refitted fog lights on a single system should be ok.

I have a few of the original types they used. I believe they were generally a magnetic roof mount unit predominately used in the 70's and they plugged in the cigarette lighter.
And for reference all that share in the older age group may remember the TV show Starsky & Hutch, every time they had to run they reached out and stuck a red one on their roof.
When Gene restored the spinner he used the newer type as you have pictured above, I will post some reference pictures. |

Those prices are offworld, I can get these lights for $9.99 each and they look exactly the same, just negotiating the massive shipping fee attached
to them at present, will update as i get updated. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

That is a bargain price! You gonna post a video with all the lights working when it's done? Would love to see it. |

Your not wrong joberg, the way it is at the moment if i turn everything on at once, especially the neon signs and stay in the room for more than 10 minutes, the colour processing in my eyes whacks out for a while, could be a problem _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

So... which one of us is going to build the full size spinner to go with the lights? _________________

Heres a very rough plan of what i want to do with the spinner lights.....
The plan is to bring the whole cost to under a hundred bucks. Any obs or possible improvements are most welcome and any hi res pics of the original set up would be appreciated. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

If you want to keep the cost down, you could always use white reflector tape on the upper part instead of acrylic. I think they sell it in 2 in wide strips that you pay for by the foot. _________________
