Hello all,

I always wanted to do a 'spinner' but finding a model spinner has proven difficult. This one is a resin model from Japan. I am not sure of its lineage and it certainly is not a dead on replica of the spinner in the movie.

However, it looks like a spinner and that is all that is important. Perhaps it is a different year or model or it has different options. Yeah - that will be the explanation.

The resin did not come out of its mold perfectly so I have had to repair a few imperfections around the front of the model. But that is almost complete. While the putty and surfacer has been drying, I have been painting the interior. It was difficult to get an authority for how the interior is supposed to look so I improvised.

I think I did ok except for the seats, they look a little too dirty. I might try to fix them before I close it up.

The canopy is a vaccuform thing so I will take my time in cutting and fitting. Vaccuform intimidates me a little!

Thanks for looking and comments welcome!

looks like the 'Invisible Studios' Kit. Cool kit and I think they tried to retain much of the Syd Mead concept styling in it, not as much as the TVC-15 kits though. A lot of good pictures of the actual film used models and interiors can be found at BladeZone.com.

I can't wait to see what you do with it. I haven't started mine yet so I will be watching progress intently.

Small model to work with, but good effort so far.

This has been a learning process...

The canopy took a long time but I think I got it initially but its dip in future left something to be desired. I am thinking of stripping it or redipping it.

The paint went on well. I tried Vallejo this time and after some initial problems, it went on. Unfortunately, you cannot see the pre-shading anymore but I might do some post shading to get some of the effect back. I am not 100% if the paint is accurate or not. I have seen spinners in many shades of blue.

It still needs considerable touch-ups though. I am now working on the complicated lights that are supposed to be installed on the top of the spinner.

Not bad...To make sure the white parts are crisp, you could experiment with white tape; easy to cut (on the model itself) and the result is top notch (my two cents Wink ).

Its looking really good so far, once its all done I'm sure it'll be a real eye catcher. The canopy on yours looks to have been cast much better than mine, I can't seem to get a clean fit no matter what I've tried.

I used reflective tape on mine, its easy to cut to shape and apply plus catches the light well. Although I did hand paint the white marks on the ertl spinner.

A little more work - I touched up the paint problems and then I glossed. I had a feeling these decals would suck and wow, do they ever. They are not in register and they are pretty badly done. I tried to cut as close to the decal as I could. They seem to laugh at setting solutions too....

Right now I am working on the lights that are supposed to go on the roof rack. I hope they turn out well.

Here are some pictures:

On small models it's better to use an airbrush to apply the paint rather than a spray-can...the final coat (either clear, or gloss) will have a better, smoother look since the "drops" of paint produced by the airbrush are more "in scale" with the model. With 1/6 scale you can start using a spray-can but make sure the noozle is adapted for a fine mist (just tricks of the trade ).

Shame that some of the lettering is not in scale with the model, but all in all it was a good effort.

That is awesome, I love the work done on the lightbar, one small change for me, the red lights would be amber.

Corsair, I have the same kit (some more clean I guess) and this process will be very useful to paint mine when I decide to take a pencil... Thank you for sharing!

PostPosted: Mon Feb 15, 2010 10:28 pm    Post subject: 1/48 DECALS and CANOPY? Reply with quote

hi Everyone

I am doing another 2 of these models for a friend but they did not come with decals and the canopies were in really bad shape.

Anyone know of a place where I could get 1 or 2 sets of decals and 2 canopies?

THANKS!!
