LOL !!!

Kubrick agreed to this change because this song has some references to the moon an it's talking about a dying candle...

Fred

Here is what I've found about the song itself and a translation of the excerpt Hal sings at the end :

"Au Clair de la Lune" is a common French folk song that dates back to at least the mid-18th Century. In 2008, the earliest known recording of the human voice was digitized, and the unknown singer on the recording is singing a small snippet of "Au Clair de la Lune". The song references the French version of the Commedia Dell'Arte - Pierrot is the French version of Pedrolino, and Harlequin is the French version of Arlecchino. We can presume that our unnamed lady is Columbina/Columbine. It's unknown whether the original version of the song used these character names, or whether they were plugged in later.

Hal sings this :

Au clair de la lune
Mon ami Pierrot
Prete-moi ta plume
Pour écrire un mot.

Ma chandelle est morte
Je n'ai plus de feu
Ouvre-moi ta porte
Pour l'amour de Dieu.

and it means that :

In the light of the moon, Pierrot, my friend
Loan me your pen to write something down
My candle's dead, I've got no flame to light it
Open your door, for the love of God!

"Open your door, for the love of God!" Laughing

It's almost like this song was written for 2001.

HAL: Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?

Dave (oldzey): Not meaning to hijack, but just wanted to mention that "The Shining" section of the above Kubrick site is awesome! Wink

HAL: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
