Hey folks,
I'm hoping you can give me a bit of help with a little project I'm planning on putting into motion in the next few months...
I've done some searching of previous threads & posts here in these forums FIRST (naturally) but haven't found much on this subject (though I'm prepared to be corrected on this).

As we all know, they originally wanted Harrison Ford's Deckard to have a futuristic, but still undeniably "Film Noir" look right down to the fact that he'd be a flat foot/Private Eye/Sam Spade type right down to the fact that he'd be wearing a fedora. But or course, they went to work on Blade Runner just as Harrison was wrapping up with his little Indie (ouch, THAT pun hurt) Art House flick called Raiders of the Lost Ark and Ford insisted he wanted to do something different from the neck up (hence no hat - but a haircut that was ahead of it's time).

STILL, it was the original plan and so I wanted to eventually get an outstanding Hat Maker (with whom I've done business a few times now) to make me a version of a Deckard Fedora (at least, the way I'M picturing it) to go with my AbbyShot Deckard Trench Coat... I even had the folks at AbbyShot send me an extra swatch of the coat's cloth so I'd be able to send it to this Hat Maker eventually and have him try to find a ribbon color that comes close to matching in color.
Once this little project is ready to go, it will be entirely a fabrication of my idea about what that would've looked like matched up with his skills in bringing it to life.

Anyway, I made some passing reference to these plans of mine in the Fedora Forum over at Club Obi Wan and immediately got some encouraging feedback as well as interest in seeing the finished product.

Of course, THAT site is geared (again, sorry for the unavoidable pun) towards all things "Indy" and was therefore not exactly the right coffee table for this kind of conversation... This sort of thing (while perhaps intruiging to some of the folks over at IndyGear) is probably more interesting to yourselves (and likely, a few friends over at The Fedora Chronicles)...
So, long story short: I realized that I was way overdue in mentioning this project HERE, to all of you.

As for the bit of help I'm asking for... I'm not a very tech-savvy guy who knows how to do "Screen Grabs" and the like. I know I've seen the shot of the costume sketch (sketchES?) on one of the Blade Runner Supplemental Materials Discs and I'm hoping someone here might be able to produce a shot (or two) of what they can find... I'd really appreciate it.

Now, in an effort to be open and honest about this subject, even though the original design sketches for that hat exist doesn't mean I'm following them to the letter... I'm not necessarily looking to have THAT exact "Concept Hat" made... I'm looking to have a Blade Runner Style hat made that I'LL wear with my Deckard Trench Coat... I think some of my ideas for this hat will suit my tastes... but maybe not everyone's.

...But I'd invite anyone who thinks they've got a better idea for the look of this hat to either - please - share it with me OR work together with an Artist like John Penman (of Penman Hats) - for example - to make it come true...
(If you've got a BETTER BR Hat in your head... PLEASE, get it made and show us!)

Thanks for your time, guys!
Mitch

This is from BladeZone...

Not very big, but for some reason my computer wont let me do screen caps. Maybe a copyright feature in Vista. Hope it helps.

Outstanding andy!
Very Happy
Those are exactly the images I had seen before!
Thank you!
I had a feeling someone here would come through for me on this (and frankly, you would've been up at the top of the list of suspects).

Quick question for all of you that I meant to ask before:
Is anyone here aware of anyone else attemping something like this?

I mean, I'm aware that there's pretty much not a single BR prop that someone hasn't tried to either obtain or replicate, (and I remember once seeing an actual early Blaster Concept - that up until then had existed only on paper - that someone actually built from scratch!) but I've never heard of someone trying to expand their Deckard outfit to include the "Fedora Look" seen only in concept sketches.

Has this been done before... or am I travelling on unknown roads here?
Appreciate any additional help, guidance, wisdom, criticism, advise, opinion or warnings you may have for me.

In other words, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks again,
Mitch

Nobody has done it before as far as I have ever seen. I think the iconic image is of him without the hat and short hair. If he someone wore a fedora too it might look too much like a character from another movie. I may have to take a closer look around his apartment to see if one might be lying around though. It would make sense that they may have had one for him anyway in case of rain Wink

For some other Ideas check out Gaff's Fedora he wears at the end of the movie, and the one Bryant wears after Deck shoots Zhora.

I've not seen anyone attempt this either.

I think whatever you come up with will look great.
I think i prefer Deckard w/o a hat personally but love seeing the concept items aswell.

Cant wait to see what you come up with Smile

Oh, don't get me wrong, Gaff... I prefer that look, too (after all, it's part of why I wear my hair this way...)
But I'm also a fedora guy and am eager to see how this "Hybrid Idea" would look.
This is all still many months away, of course... but I think I might have a fun time fine-tuning my ideas for this...
Cheers,
Mitch

Hello!

I'm new here, but have lurked for a while. I'm not so interested in props as opposed to the overal BR look, especially Deckard's apartment.

In terms of custom hats, you might want to go to http://www.thefedoralounge.com/

There's a number of custom hat makers there and probably an interest in your project.

Welcome Tony,

I too was more into the look for a long time before I got into the props. I still love the Aesthetics of the movie to this day, and always get a thrill when I see something that captures that feel for me.

Thanks for the advice, Tony... I'll definitely mention my project there as well!
And welcome aboard... I'm kinda' flattered that you picked one of my threads in which to make your first post.
Hope to see you making comments here on these boards again sometime...
All the Best,
Mitch

Wow,

Thank you all very much! I never expected such a reception from a first post..

The first time I saw BR was prior to release. I was taking a class at UCLA Extension on film marketing. We went to a screening, I think at the DGA, but I'm not sure anymore. And the film was BR. And it ended with the elevator slamming shut and no "happy ending". I can no longer remember the differences between that edit and the various releases. But that film stuck in my memory. And that's probably why I am here.

I'm not so interested in Blasters, or other props. I like the whole look, and perticularily Deckard's apartment. That's where I hope to contribute here in the future.

2019 is not so far from now.

Tony

That is specifically why I created the "Blade Runner Aesthetic" section. Please feel free to post anything you feel like on it. I would love to see more ideas in that section. It is a personal one for me.

Welcome again Tony, and great idea for the fedora project Mitch.

Welcome Tony; you'll be happy to know that, from now on, your life will change for the better Smile

Yes, Mitch, great project as always...you seem to become the specialist in "Noir Haute-Couture"...after the hat, why not Deck's reading glasses?
