Considering how many times Giger's been burned by the film industry, getting him aboard would be a tough bit of work. But an absolutely necessary one. His biomechanics are pretty much what really sold the whole alien-ness of the jockey and the alien, it truly didn't look like anything fashioned by the hand of man.
As for having a commercial director at the helm, hadn't David Fincher only done music videos prior to taking up Alien3? _________________

I see disaster written all over this.Oh well I can hope I'm wrong or simply ignore it after it comes out.I've ignored every sequel but the first. |

I really hope We are pleasantly surprised by this, but Hollywoods films have been utterly horrible. I havent gone to a theater in years because all of the tripe they have been cranking out. If we get to see all the elements (giger, huge sets) that made ALIEN a classic.. that would be perfect. But if they make some "flashy modern" misinterpretation of what is supposed to be a prequel... it will Bomb, and there will will be a lot of angry people.
its sad to have to lower expectations so as not to be disappointed ... |

As much as we'd all like to see a return to the purer faith version as established by Ridley Scott in the first film, ultimately, no matter who's directing or designing the sets, it comes down to some bean counter in Hollywood, whose whole view of the project is limited by the narrow constraints of 'franchise' 'merchandising' and 'sequels'.
What is it they say? Hope for the best, but expect the worst. _________________

Yep, sometimes is good to remind people that studio owners are lawyers and business men, not artists. |

Yep, you're right...
and I'm not even sure having the original team of designers aboard would make any difference, mainly because I didn't like that much what Giger did on ALIEN 3, pretty cheap re-interpretation of his original concept IMHO.
The only one who would REALLY make the difference would be Sir Ridley himself but since he will "only" produce it, well... all my hopes and expectations will be concentrated on THE FOREVER WAR instead since he's really supposed to direct this one !!!

Well, if Ridley is like Lucas (producer on ESB and ROTJ)then, yes, by all means the film would follow the original look. |

Well this certainly is surreal....
20th Century Fox demanding that Scott direct it or no deal... just really remarkable. they must have seen how bad the sequels ruined ALIEN and turned it into a parody.... all I can say is WOW.
THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY TO DO THIS.. Astonishing news if this is true.
If Scott will not do it, then better left alone. Only Scott could do it correctly. After reading the post here on propsummit with his book and his Interview, I am convinced without a doubt he is the true visionary here... one could not begin to speculate what ideas or possibilities have been churning around in his mind regarding explanation and origins..... |

While making a film is a huge investment (money, time, etc) Ridley has certainly many projects he's involved with and that's why he has only agreed to produce (less work involved). If, and that's a big "if", the same production team works on the new project, they'll have to respect the vision of the director...unless Ridley knows something we don't regarding the directorial abilities of his future son-in-law?
I understand Fox's view on that matter; they don't want to f**k it up! |

Worst idea ever!
Makes me think of the south park where speilberg and lucas repeatedly butt raped Indiana Jones and a stormtrooper.
Cant they leave it alone.
Haven't they done enough damage.
And its not like they "dont want to fluck it up" either, or AVP 1 and 2 wouldn't have happened.
Its simply heartless coldblooded greed. |

It is too difficult to disagree with that one. Well said.
..Just like star-wars.. I thought the one with the ewoks was just a bit of temporary insanity on George lucas's part... but when it continued on though all the rest of them... I cant even watch the first one now... totally sucks |

Sadly, I have to give Lucas some credit. Its a feat and a half to pull off 3 sequels to a great scifi franchise that each suck worse than the last one. _________________

Totaly agree with you guys... and that's why I'm so glad to still have unaltered jewels like Blade Runner, ALIEN, 2001... or THX 1138 !

It was going to be an OX originally! An OX Alien that terrorised a bunch of monks who lived in some kind of floating space-monastery - that was built out of wood.
I've just watched Terminator Salvation (I took my nephew) and they really need to leave this stuff alone now. Some new ideas wouldn't go amiss.
I echo the sentiments of other posters who recognise that the (virtually) unchanged, unexploited status of Blade Runner is part of what makes it such a treasure.
EDIT: I realise I may have confused two seperate discarded ALIEN3 scripts in this post! |

That we can still have the opportunity to cherish these is a very lucky stroke. A product of the personal 70's style of filming.
(And everything from Kubrick and his 68 opus)!
That there are any extras or behind the scenes left is a miracle. And due to the practitioners of such beautiful and personal film making taking it upon themselves to record it themselves.
These days they keep extra footage and mindless junk to sell Special DVD's. No body saved anything outside of the finished screen back in the modeling days.
Especially for sci fi, it was always pulp before 77-78, nobody would be bothered to pay attention to the workmanship behind it before the money came in.
Although Bob gets a hard time for "trashing" some of the stuff. Without his pulp instinct, it would have never been saved from scrap in the first place.
The only complaint I could have is that he should have tried to release these pieces earlier somehow. |

So what do you guys think of Forbidden Planet?Maybe the first scifi movie to get a big budget treatment.Clearly had a huge impact on Star Trek and probably everything that came after. |
