Code 3 "National Air and Space Collection" Apollo 11 "One Small Step..." Lunar Module.

This fantastic miniature depicts the Apollo Lunar Module just as it appears in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. The mission Commander has already emerged from the lander and observes as his Lunar Module Pilot comes down the ladder, about to take his first step onto the soil of another world!

Code 3 has done a magnificent job of capturing the details and spirit of the historic scene. The Lunar Module is reproduced with painstaking precision, complete with antennas, rocket thrusters and other fine details.

This model has NOT been displayed! It has been in climate-controlled storage since purchase, only opened to have photos taken. This set is complete and mint in box!

From the Certificate included with the model:

An actual lunar module, one of 12 built for Project Apollo, is on display at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. This module was the inspiration for this collectible replica. It was meant to be used in low Earth orbit to test the techniques of separation, rendezvous, and docking with the command and service module. The second of two such test vehicles, its mission was cancelled after the complete success of the first flight.

The lunar module had two stages. The descent (lower) stage was equipped with a rocket motor to slow the rate of descent to the lunar surface. It contained exploration equipment and remained on the Moon when the astronauts left. The ascent (upper) stage contained the crew compartment and a rocket motor to return the astronauts to the orbiting command module. After the crew entered the command module for the trip back to Earth, the lunar module was released and eventually crashed into the Moon.

Several materials cover the spacecraft to protect its inner structure from temperature and micrometeoroids. Specially designed materials maintain temperature balance inside the craft. The black materials on parts of the LM are heat-resistant nickel-steel alloy, 0.0021072 millimeters (0.0000833 inches) thick. The black sheets absorb heat when exposed to the Sun and radiate to the blackness of deep space. Not metal foil, the gold-colored plastic films are thinly coated with aluminum, which reflects the sun’s heat and insulates the spacecraft. The thin, gold-colored films are used in 'blankets' of up to 25 layers. All of the plastic films protect the spacecraft from micrometeoroids.

Height: 7 m (23 ft)
Width: 9.4 m (31 ft)
Weight: On the Earth - 15,150 kg (33,450 lb) (with crew & propellant)
Launch vehicle: Saturn V

NOTE: EXTRA ASTRONAUT INCLUDED! These sets were originally manufactured with BOTH astronauts wearing commander's stripes. Later a replacement figure was issued with no stripes, to represent the Lunar Module Pilot. I am including all three figures!

(To be perfectly nitpicky, I'd point out that on Apollo 11 NEITHER astronaut wore stripes! But you can display just the one stripeless figure with the model, and have an accurate representation of Neil Armstrong coming down the ladder.)

This model is hand-painted and details are covered in 24K gold. The base incudes silver plaque. Overall dimensions of this piece are 9"long X 7" high X 11" wide. The module and astronauts are removable from the base. Comes with Certificate of Authenticity numbered 2527.
