I talked to Bob today. He said he would get the depth of the recess where the key goes. |

That would be great! I hope it's enough - there's some very tricky angles going on inside that box.
Well, I went to that magnet site found by jtparker in the other thread, and ordered one of the magnets. (If it's correct, I'll get the other three later!)
I must say, after basically doing my best to reverse-engineer this prop from thin air and various photos, it was extremely gratifying when I looked on my drawings to see how big the magnets should be - and one of the available magnet sizes turned out to be identical within 0.5mm! So I must be doing something right?
Sorry if that sounds big-headed, but I was very pleased with myself. And I always find it a great boost to the process when something 'checks out' with real-life.
Now don't ask me why, but I just realised that I have never checked the Propstore entry on the key. People posted the photos here but that was all. And as you know, Propstore usually include dimensions in their description!
So... according to Propstore the key was
Quote: | 12cm x 4.5cm (16.5" x 6.5"). |
Hmm... even I could see that those two sets of measurements don't match up with each other! And even stranger, neither the metric nor the imperial dimensions are even close to what the key ought to be. It's somewhere between the two.
This is very confusing - someone must have had an off day when they wrote that entry. So I'm really no nearer to having an impartial size reference for the key. _________________ Mike

Sometimes the Propstore measurements make no sense I think that the measurements Stephen made of the box could give you a good approximation of the key. |

They certainly did, and it seems I'm pretty close already. However they couldn't put the tape measure down inside the box, and we were hoping to make a key that will fit in there.
Which means I need all the help I can get! _________________ Mike

First magnet arrived today. I must admit, I was a bit startled at how small it is! I mean, it's the right size, but in my mind's eye the key was larger somehow.
To rectify this I printed out my key outline. That's what you see here (plus a battery for scale).
I think I might have to cut a rough key mockup and see how it fits in the hand. _________________ Mike

Here is what Bob said about the in side of the box.
"The inside of the box to the key holder is 7/8 of an inch.
the depth of the key holder is 3/8 of an inch.
The screw to the inside top of box is 1 3/4 inches."
I hope this helps some more.

Hey Mike.
if you want you can send me a outline with measurments. I can rough cut one out of wood and send it to Bob for a fit check.
Better yet. if you can send me a PDF that will print out to scale I can email it to Bob to just cut it out of paper at his place and then he can take a picture with it in the box...
How does that sound?

That sounds amazing! Do you think Bob will be up for doing that?
More to the point... will he realise what we're trying to do?
Oh well, can't be helped.
I had to stare at those dimensions for a while but I think I know what Bob means now! I will attempt to plug the numbers into my model tomorrow, and see what happens. _________________ Mike

I think he has an idea already. He said he would love to get one for his box. LOL I told him we would see what we could do.
He is such a nice person.

The numbers help a little, but not enough for me to really nail it down.
The PDF is a great idea and it would work, but the whole thing feels a bit like working in reverse...
I wonder if this would be more helpful: I could send over an image with mystery dimensions clearly marked, and then we ask Bob "please measure A, B, C" etc. I know it's a bit cheeky, but if he is willing it would save a lot of time.
Maybe we could do both at once? Is that asking too much? _________________ Mike

PDF on its way to you... with a 'best guess' key outline, plus a list of mystery dimensions.
I hope Bob is patient enough to help! _________________ Mike

This project keeps getting better & better.
It p**ses me off to think that someone would steal the key from Bob in the first place though. |

Found something pretty close to unidentified "A" part in my garage today...
It's an early 70's sewing machine bobbin (diameter = 2 centimeters)
Hope it'll help...
Fred

Excellent work guys.
FYI on Bob. His eyes have been giving him fits. He has been having some other testing done so it is really wiped him out. I told him to do what he can but don't push it. So maybe later this next week if he is feeling better.
Best
