how far off is the off-world scale on this to the sidkit?

I had the pleasure of meeting with mspaw at my house today. His project is near and dear to my heart as I had intended to build an improved rod, using machined metal, no castings. I wanted sharp definition and a chemical finish (gun blueing, inc. black, etc.) that would not soften the edges or definition the way paint does. Then mspaw posts his proposed project. Turns out he lives in the area. I wanted him to see a unassembled and unpainted Coyle sighting rod from his latest Worldcon replica, and show him some very high definition photos I have of the original rod from the hero gun.

Anyway, I can assure you that this will be the deal of the century for the true BR Blaster fan. I saw the early prototype and it is great as-is IMHO but Mike intends to improve on it. Here is a comparsion photo showing a Sidkit on top, a Coyle in the middle and an early prototype from mspaw at the bottom. You may note that Siderio put his mounting holes exactly where Rich Coyle has been putting his.

Here they are from another angle.

Here are two from my Worldcon Coyle blaster.

Here is a collage I put together from the hero gun in low rez.

BTW, thanks again for lunch, mspaw.

Just a bit of an update.

I was able to get back to the shop last night and finished off 4 of the revised design rods. As you can see in the photos the only thing missing is the knerling on the back end. Based on the photos im counting about an 18 knerl per inch sizing. Ive sent a prototype off to the machine shop that may be doing the knerling for me and expect to hear back about it early next week. In the meantime im waiting on stock to show up to cut all the blanks. i may also be able to have some other opperations done CNC as well but im still looking into this. Either way its going to be a little bit before the run is done, but I hope to keep everyone up to date as news rolls in.

The mounting holes fortunatly match for both the Sidkit and the Coyle guns by the way. ive tapped the mounting holes with a 2-56 thread and will include the machine screws. They are small/short little buggers. Something you will not mostlikely find at your local hardware store.

Also Im looking at doing a prewired version, Id be interested in hearing how many people might prefer this over the base piece.

All for now.

So no matter what this would be made to be wired with green LED's. I really think interest is going to depend on cost. Like if the price was double I would just try to wire it myself.

I'd be in for one of the pre-wired.
I could send half payment right now.
If possible, please pm me your Pay-Pal info...this looks AWESOME!

That is some great research and work. I'm definitely in for a rod, and depending on price, I might make it a pre-wired one.

Wow, thanks for voting with youre pocketbook but I want to have a set done before doing a signup list and start taking payments. last night I was able to make 30 blanks and I plan on doing another 20 tonight for a run of 50. as you might guess there are about 17 seperate opperations to make the piece not including finishing. It takes about an hour and a half per to do everything so its slow, but Im really liking how they look.

1 or 2 of the pre-wired flavor for me.

These look really great so far.

The last 25 should be Drilled out tomorrow then on to the front tapper and scallop. That leaves the scallops on the mid section and the wholes for the attachment and wiring. It looks like they could all go out to have the nerling done by end of the week. Ill start looking at building up the wiring next.

Here are all 50 drilled and ready for the details on the front to be done tonight. You can see how the sureface looks on the raw steel in the upper left. It needs to be surfaced and then layout ink is added so that all the reference lines can be added. if I dont drill any rod stock for awhile ill be just fine with that!

Last night I was able to get the taper on the front of all 50 as well as the inset for the front LED and the scallop right behind the taper.

Tonight Ill start in on the scallops for the center section. The setup is a bit involved and my guess is it will take a few mights to do them all. Post that its the screw holes for the mountaing and a recess on the back end for the LED then off to be knerled.

I did a test run for routing the wiring. It takes a bit with the blind hole but is certainly doable.

Oh and im still planning on doing a full signup sheet here as soon as they are back from the knerling so please be patient.
