Some great suggestions and I'd like to add the followiing:
Dark Star
Soylent Green
Alphaville
Fahrenheit 451
Talking of Kubrick I've just finished watching an early noir crime effort of his called 'The Killing'. On the credits at the start of the film I noticed a certain 'Joseph Turkel' was amongst the cast. It's a brief non-speaking part but he was unmistakable once he appeared on screen.
Jo's character 'Tiny' ends up much the same way as Dr Eldon Tyrell!
Couple of grabs below.

The Killing is one my favorite Noirs, it’s sort of an homage to John Huston’s the Asphalt Jungle-- Kubrick added a dizzying kinetic pace to the genre that makes it just fly by when you watch it. Joe Turkel was also in Kubrick’s next film, Paths of Glory. |

Yep, and he dies too in this one !
Reading all the previous posts, I agree with all that was said excepted THE 5th ELEMENT and SATURN 3... C'mon guys, these movies, "classics" ???
On my list of personal favourites :
2001 : a Space Odyssey (Kubrick)
Apocalypse Now (Coppola)
The good, the bad & the ugly (Leone)
Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder !!!)
La belle et la bête / Beauty and the beast (Jean Cocteau)
Almost famous (Russel Crowe)
The deer hunter (Cimino)
Good fellas (Scorcese)
Children of men (Cuaron)
King of hearts (Philippe de Broca)
Casanova (Fellini) (why is the "Maestro" forgotten nowadays ???)
Paris, Texas (Wenders)
Les 400 COUPS / The Four Hundred Blows (François Truffaut) (the "Antoine Doinel" quadrilogy)
Playtime (Jacques Tati)
This is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner)
The Elephant man (Lynch)
etc...
Fred
PS ; There's also "Irreversible" by Gaspar Noe... It's a GREAT film, but just in case you'd be interested in seeing it, please read this first :

The last shot is one of the most scary / depressing shots ever imo... ("Time destroys everything" was the tagline of the film) _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

Fantastic Planet has always been up there for me just because of its pure weirdness.
I've also been going down the IMDB Top 250 as voted by users:
http://www.imdb.com/chart/top
I've really enjoyed these movies from that list that I've watched/rewatched lately:
Shichinin no samurai
Cidade de Deus
The Lives of Others
Citizen Kane
Spirited Away |

Wasn't that good old Joseph in Shining too ?...as a ghost bartender if i recall well...
I like The killing quite well, even if i prefer The Asphalt Jungle. Funny that Sterling Hayden played in both movies similar characters !...
Oh well, i love classic films noirs and Sci-fi movies ( SF + FN = guess what !! ) _________________ I know what you're thinking...did he fire six shots or only five ?
Well to tell you the truth, in all the excitement i kind of lost track myself... |

The Jacques Tati ones are special...sometimes it helps to know people who actually experienced the era IMHO. The history of the actual process of shooting the movie, the behind-the-scene stuff (interviews with actors/directors/DP, etc) makes it more special and make you appreciate the movie better...I mean with all we know/don't know about BR makes it more special. |
