I'm not sure that there were originally two different terms. The words seem too similar to me. I can't think of a very good example but it would be like having two tools in your toolbox; one called a screwdriver and the other a screwdreever.
I think the term was originally one or the other and over time it got mispronounced and split into two pronunciations for the same thing (i.e. model parts added to detail a model).

I must admit I originally thought it was 'widgets'. But I used it in a sentence to Martin Bower and was corrected to 'wiggets'.
Entirely possible that the word has changed over time.
I do know that 'widget' was used in the UK to describe the component in a beer can that rattles around and gives the beer all the froth on the top when the can is opened.
Harry, you probably remember as you're British too the advert with Jack Dee years ago advertising some beer about how it's got a widget.
'Widget, it's got a widget, a lovely widget...a widget it has got'
Shoot I've got that stuck in my head now.... ![](images/smiles/003.gif) |

Wasn't that Boddingtons, the one with the widget in it? Then everyone else copied them.
Anyway, thanks for the explanations of greebles/greeblies/widgets/wiggets/nurnys...! At least I now know what they are. |

I think Boddingtons pioneered it, but the ad with Jack Dee was for John Smiths.
So how do widgets relate to ALIEN??? Well surely ASPEN BEER CANS OF THE FUTURE have WIDGETS! there had to be a connection some where!!
Okay back to Alien and the Nostromo... ![Cool](images/smiles/icon_cool.gif) |

Graham: I've been playing around with your drawings and wondered, based on the stowed configuration you've drawn, how you imagined the lift foot and platform to deploy. Here's my 'sketch', using your drawings:
In particular, I'm looking at the closeup you posted on the site that shows the "Underside Airlock & Observation Blister Module." The lift foot appears to the right of the airlock and stowed lift.
The movie depicts the lift dropping along the hydraulic strut and shows the foot between camera and lift. I wonder if the lift foot is behind the lift?
Can you tell me how you've imagined it? Do you intend to show the lift deployed in the drawings at some point? |

Well as I was drawing it up I was thinking about what we see in the movie, which you too have picked up on, and that's the 'foot' being inbetween the camera and lift platform. I'm assuming they did this to help hide the forklift truck (?) that the platform was connected to to film it.
So I located the 'foot' on the right side of the airlock hatch accordingly, and it made sense that both that and the platform didn't just hang out there to be hit by debris - so I decided to show them both as swinging up, stowed out the way. Plus, this served another function - the platform in the stowed and locked position helped to protect the airlock outer door.
So that's how I ended up showing it, and the thought processes involved.
As to what the large 'arm' is under the module - heck I've no idea - it was on the sketch by Stuart Rose (and as I found out from Martin Bower, sketched some time after both the models and full sized sets were built and filmed!) - but it sure looks great - it must serve some purpose somehow. Maybe something maintenance related.
Hope this helps! The foot extended isn't on this sheet, but I'd intended to do a second sheet which concentrates on the functions of the undercarriage, enlarged Narcissus shuttle stowed in the release bay and other enlarged details. Not sure when that will be though.... probably when other areas of the ship are figured out.
Here's a sketch, I was moving quicker than a nun on LSD when I did this so forgive me... I'll do more on it later when I have more time...

Sound reasoning!
And placing the foot to the right of the airlock opening (and chamber), allows all of that lift track to feed down from the belly of the ship so the lift can touch ground...a pretty hefty distance, eh? |

Aww, thanks everyone!
This is the first print I've done; I've sold 45 so far and may lower the number of prints I'd intended to offer and may stop it at say 100... I'll see how it goes.
I've had alot of nice comments from various people so it's been great ![](images/smiles/003.gif) |

I've got a bit of an impatient question but here goes, if you ordered these prints to be delivered to UK roughly how long did it take ?
US postal can take sometimes 1-2 weeks but i've no past experience with UPS.
& i'm jealous at you guys who've already got yours !! |

Some new news over on John Eaves' Blog on how the restoration of the USCSS Nostromo is coming along; looks like it's pretty much complete and if the weather held up, was going to be delivered yesterday to the Propstore of London LA branch for display!
The forward nose section housing the bridge is already at the branch apparently, and just needs to be fixed on before displaying.
More here:
http://johneaves.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/the-nostromo/
and here:
http://johneaves.wordpress.com/2010/01/19/nostromo-part-2/#more-4115
Have to say, they've done a really superb job. All the detail looks like its there. The only parts that niggle me are the forward satellite dish area and the forward 'docking tube' which doesn't seem to be at the right angle.
But the landing legs look awesome. Wouldn't mind it sitting in my living room, though the missus would kill me....
And I like the creative use of my blueprints on the background on one of the images!!! ![](images/smiles/001.gif) |

Thats great Graham! Hey those prints make a great backdrop for the model. How did it end up a propstore..? Should be in the Smithsonian!! _________________ ______________________________________
