Oh, didn't know those sketches were at the center of a paternity test case !
Looking at them you quickly realize they were not drawn by someone who knows how to draw... they're rather lame... but I agree with you, a lot of people contributed to the final look of the TIE, it's a team effort (but the basic shape stood unaltered, the design is so simple and efficient) !
Must say Lucas still is my best candidate for those sketches...

Thank you guys for the MST3K posts !
Let's talk now about the similarities between Blade Runner and Demolition Man !
Davis L. Snyder worked as an Art director on the first one and prodcution designer on the second one... Don't know if it can completely explain why some scenes or situations look very close in both movies, but it could maybe be part of the explanation, at least on certain visual aspects of Demolition Man...
Let's see what we have here...
Opening shots in both movies :
NOTE : In Demolition Man, the city where the action takes place is "San Angeles", the name originaly planned for Sir Ridley's 2019 version of Los Angeles...
Vilains in medical apparel :
NOTE : In both cases, the vilain kills the guy he's talking with in this "introduction scene".
Eyes...
Rather close, isn't it ?
Coming next : nazi cops, tunnels and frozen corpses !

Thank you, Neil !
Saw it again a few weeks ago, that's when I've decided to talk about the similarities with BR in the "Cabinet"...
It's really a funny film and an interesting variation on 1984 as well... Not a masterpiece but definitely worth watching it...

you have some amazing cross-referencing abilities Fred! Perhaps you are half-Esper?

Photek is right: "Fred's cabinet of curiosities" sounds good to me.
Yes, "Demolition Man" was interesting in terms of similarities between it and BR, but what I liked most of all is that the production team got to display pretty much all the concept cars done, at the time, by the Big Three...pretty cool in my book |

I hope you don't mind me posting in your topic, Fred, but i just noticed something weird when i checked my Facebook.
This time to do with music.
I instantly thought it was ALIEN, but not, it's Meshuggah's new album "Alive"
I know it's done on purpose but still think it's worth showing.
Look at the tag line aswell....
in space no one can hear you unless you scream

OK, time to unveil those...
BR and DM cops... the inspiration for both uniforms is obviously nazi... (the Demolition Man version looks very close to the German national party SA uniform)
It looks like the same tunnel was used in both films. (i know it's located in L.A. but I can't remember its name)
In both films you have a death caused by a cold environment. IIRC what was written in FUTURE NOIR, a deleted scene was supposed to show Chew's body completely frozen with policemen all around his place, investigating the crime scene... then the corpse was supposed to accidentaly hit the ground and explode into shreds, just like Phoenix's head in Demolition Man (well, I agree, Sly doesn't strike it accidentaly in the film)
Coming next : The vilain and his maker... and A L I E N props !

Great work Fred!
Can't wait to see the upcoming posts.
One thing I noticed, the emblem on that DM car in the tunnel looks familiar, kinda like Tyrell's logo. |
