Never seen any of those in the movie. The Dragon is similar to the White Dragon sign, but not the same. I am sure I would remember Einstein too if he was in it. I say not made for the movie, but maybe the first was inspired by it.

Yes,I agree.I think there is a slightly misleading quote to say they are from Blade runner and give no COA or provenance.I think buyer beware !!! |

I took it upon myself to tell the "artist" that there was no way that was the sign from the White Dragon noodle bar, and that they were misrepresenting themselves and the product. We'll see what they say ……
This was their reply a short time later.
Quote: | "The word "original" means that this was hand-crafted, making it one of a kind and that there is not a factory producing thousands of neons similar to this. Dr. Neon lives in Asheville near me and is famous for his neons of Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe. Blade Runner is his favorite movie and this neon was made to pay homage to the white dragon. It is original and there is no neon available like it other than the actual one used in the film.
I never stated that this exact neon was used in the movie, that it was a movie set piece, or tried to insinuate that this neon is the exact one used in the film. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding as a result of that."
|
My reply to this was:
So be it, Ms. Thompson. Your description of said item is carefully crafted so as to confuse someone who is not the most diligent reader. An example would be your definition of the word "original." Also, your statement, "Made for the movie Blade Runner," is not correct in that it was not commissioned to be made as a set piece for the movie.
Here is another update, hopefully the last:
Quote: | Okay, major correction, and apologies. I got in touch with Dr. Neon regarding this whole issue as I am consigning it for him and he supplied the pictures/description.
This neon is authentically and legitimately made for the actual Blade Runner film. He was asked to create neons for the movie by the production studio and this one was used by them. There is a certificate of authenticity and other documents that he has that prove this. When you watch the movie and look at the piece, "DR.N" is clearly displayed on the bottom of the neon piece. This is a signature for Dr. Neon.
With his certificates, documents, and his reputation at stake, I really can't imagine he would have me consign a piece and attempt to state that it was something it wasn't. |
Hopefully it is clear now, as I stand corrected.

Seems like many vendors thing about Blade Runner collectors as dummies... and use "Blade Runner" as a magnet.... Poor!
But... you know, ebay is a great sea to fish... anything! _________________

Just to add a bit of, possibly superfluous, information:
As everybody already knows, the dragon sign has nothing whatsoever to do with BR.
In fact, it is a rip-off of the classic Stockholm movie theatre Draken's (The Dragon) animated neon sign. The sign was designed by artist Ragnar Person, and erected in 1939.
Instead of this "artist's" monogram, the circle contained the "SF" logotype of the Swedish movie production/distribution/theatre company Svensk Filmindustri.
Here is an image of the original: http://www.algonet.se/~furberg/funkis/drak_3.html
As a design however, it does mesh well with some of BR's more retro elements. |

Ah, I may need to clarify that a bit: while the Draken sign and the White Dragon Noodle Bar sign are slightly similar (most particularly in that both have an animated flicking tongue), they are absolutely not the same!
The background given above pertains to the Draken sign plagiarised in the auction linked in the OP only. Whether or not the Draken sign has in any way served as inspiration to the WDNB sign is outside of my knowledge.
Here's a comparison:

I have never seen any of the Neon he is selling the movie anywhere. I would ask him to have Dr Neon to clarify where in the movie his work is shown. I am still not buying it, and it wouldn't be the first time someone tried to claim they did work on the film when they did not.

Thanks for that info Vader. As we have said the design of the Dragon offered on Ebay doesn't match the one in BR and also I fail to see any of Dr. Neon designs in the movie...not a good sign |

I have also contacted the seller and they absolutely confirm that it is screen used and will provide authentication. I agree with Andy and Joberg that this particular design was not even close to the one seen and have asked for more information. _________________ More human than human |

I have not heard anything back yet, but i have been trying to find out info for myself. According to the information i found Dr Neon did not start his buisness until 1983 and made neon signs for Disney. 1983 would have been to late to have been involved with Blade Runner. _________________ More human than human |

Just noticed by looking at the film closer, that the Green Dragon may have been used. I am still looking for Einstein. The Green Dragon in the film does not have the red circle, so it can not be 100% ID'd as Dr Neon's.

Well the circle is there, but not lit. Also looks to be facing the other way, but it could be reversible. Also it is missing the trailing red neon, and the neon inside the circle does not match either version from above. Still no sign of Albert.

Well spotted Andy, the tongue is a different shape but the foot and the lower jaw certainly look correct _________________ More human than human |
