As time passed by, I more and more fell in love with Duncan Jones' MOON...
I think it's about time to open a thread devoted to this GREAT film, where we'll talk about props, production design, sets, models, etc... everything related to this smart homage to golden age Sci-Fi film classics (2001 : A Space Odyssey, A L I E N, Blade Runner, Outland) we all love !

I didn't have the bucks to buy the screenused mug that was auctioned by the Propstore of London through eBay a couple of years ago... but I really dig this prop, so I decided to make one for myself.
I spotted a white mug that was close enough in my book on french eBay. it was really easy to turn it into a Lunar Industries mug : A logo stencil, spray cans of red and black... et voilĂ !
It was so easy that I ultimately made two... One that I kept pristine and this heavily weathered version :
I would like to have a better version but can't source the original mug they used... Any ideas, anyone ? (the mug they used has a semi-square section)

Thank you Andy !
I tried many times to find it and ended nowhere but I'm pretty sure these are rather common, just like some of the small props displayed in the base...
Some of them even came from MUJI !
Look at the toiletries : The small pill containers, the tiny mirror, the cotton buds, etc... They all are MUJI. The metallic soap dispenser on the left of pic comes from CASA, a spanish version of MUJI. (we have one in the town I live in, that's where I saw it by accident)
The multi-tool is a BAHCO PKT850901, found one on eBay UK for 5GBP. The screenused one sold for 127GBP, shipping not included, at the MOON / Propstore of London eBay auction... that's a lot of cash for something like that...
Fred
PS : BTW, the original, screenused red mug sold for 225GBP and the assorted toiletries (photo posted just above in this post) sold for 67GBP... _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

Great props and great topic Fred...seems Moon made his money back in 2009 (I don't have the gross in terms of DVD sales).
Great Director and crew: Bill Pearson as supervising model-maker (uncredited) and a very talented Conceptual Designer: Gavin Rothery (check his Web-site for additional info on sets, logo, etc). One member of the RPF re-created the suit Sam Rockwell is wearing in the movie (complete with patches and watch...the suit is a German flight suit if my memory serves me well) |

Thanks JB fo rthe kind words on the mug !
Didn't know the guy who has re-created Sam Bell's suit was on the RPF, saw this on his private blog, I was about to contact him to post pictures here on our thread.
I was also going to post info about Gavin Rothery, LOVE his work on that film !

check theses out on ebay. these mugs are vintage melmac a melamine style plastic, and have a similar corporate look and feel as the one featured in MOON!.............
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-David-Douglas-ACCA-Snack-SetsTrays-Mugs-Cups-Melmac-/230605015595?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8806868079270392369
There's also a set of four with a black and yellow mug included,
check the bottom of the page.
Quite like the look of them especially with the matching tray, very institutional!
I have seen those large square tapered coffee mugs, until recently they were sold in Au Naturel, one of those stores that sell beaded moroccan scatter cusions, ethnic nic-nacs, scented candles and assorted crockery!
I will check the one locally to see if they still have them in stock!

Thanks Lee for sharing but the handles of those mug are not quite like the one from Moon. You're right when you say that that type of mug is coming in white. I'll be off to my local store, they have the same one I'm sure |

True! Joberg not screen accurate, they don't have the square taper that freds after! it was more for the look and similar colour banding on the mugs, and I love the little matching plastic tray's included!
I'll check with the local Au naturel shop on wednesday to see if they have the square mugs.
Mr Jones achieved the same feel in "Moon" with the use of signage and simple colour palette as Scott did in Alien, wherever you look you see your employers logo/colour emblazoned! |

Thank you Lee for the links... As JB said, it doesn't really match the screenused ones but has the same feel as the mysterious MOON mug...
I think I found something closer here :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380202557216&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1145
But there's a problem : The interior surface is black instead of white... Damn...
Any idea anyone ? Does they also exist with a white interior ???
Last but nost least, a link to Charles Kline's blog JB was talking about in a post above... GREAT resource info for anybody tempted in making a Sam Bell SARANG uniform :
http://charleskline.blogspot.com/
I've already ordered a few of the things needed to make one and I must say I'm very happy with my purchases ! Once completed, this is going to be an awesome costume replica !

Your welcome Fred.......and yes more for the feel than screen accuracy.
I popped into the local Au naturel but couldn't find those particular mugs!...typical that!.....when your not interested they can be found everywhere?
Anyway I talked to the manager, she knew which mug I was talking about and says more stocks should be coming in, they come in plain cream and brown, she did'nt mention other colours? I'll keep checking! |

Well, here we go again: a little blue print of that Moon Vehicule and a project to actually build it (size: 17''long X 12"wide x 9'' height).

Damn, this topic is so crowded that I have to quote myself to add new info on it !!!
I found a pic of one of the screenused jumpsuit, looks like it's displayed in Duncan Jones' home :
BTW, I received all the Sarang patches needed to complete my Sam Bell's jumpsuit the other day... as I unpacked them, this image came to my mind :
See the square patch on his chest ? Believe it or not, I had never noticed this before...
