and look, armored police officers-

Release date is August 3, 2012. Even though I'm not much of a Colin Farrell fan, count me in!

The thing that gets me about these films, like AI, I Robot, and Minority Report as well, is that they do a great job with designing the futuristic gear, but it all looks brand new and too perfect. It never seems to actually have been ever used. It was cool in 2001 to have done that, because that was part of the style then, but it takes away from the feeling of realism that I love from films like BR, Star Wars, and Alien. Hollywood just still loves it's Glamour, even when it wants to do something gritty. I really want to see those police cars at least have some wear and tear on them. Even Police cars today, show at least some wear, no matter how meticulously they are kept. This looks like it could be a very cool movie, but I feel a little let down that film makers still make this basic mistake when making Sci-Fi today. Also that police logo is pretty sad.

All too true.

No joke! It looks exactly like some sci-fi logotype I drew when I was 11!

Did they have to call it "Total Recall" ???

I can see making another film based on the short story, not sure
we need one but whatever, it's an era of remakes.

Could they at least have called it something else?

Oh well. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

They're using KRISS submachine guns. I just knew those would end up in futuristic film eventually, I didn't expect it to take 10 years.

I think this Spinner (let's call it what it is!) is more believable as a real-world, functional VTOL vehicle than the one we're used to. But it's just a less interesting design.

And I'm so tired of the gleaming white iPod/Apple aesthetic.

That does seem to be the demographic they are after though.

Well,

1. Like the new "Spinner"..but, I agree on the "Sterility" of the gear....ever see a REAL MAJOR METRO POLICE CAR...(even better..get a "ride" in one..eh hemm.) Yeah.... the product placement of the vehicles was ALMOST as bad as ..dare I say it ...FORD concept ORV's in "THUNDERBIRDS"....I'm going to go wash my mouth out right now

2. Armored cops...anyone been in Times Square GCS, or any of the NY area airports lately Laughing

3. Un-decided about the Logo...some times less is more...and more is well.... JUDGE DREAD.....oppps ...Unless ...the guy who designed it , is from NJ..

4. FEDERAL POLICE.........coming soon to a Street near you

It looks cool...

Cool

Saw some footage they shot in Toronto: the Police cars on gimballs and such and another one "driven" by C.Farell, that is on a flatbed truck with the camera and crew. They had to close some area of the Parkway (drivers not too happy with that Confused )

I cannot believe that logo passed any kind of approval anywhere, it's appalling!

Actually the graphics all over it have come up really short, I think.

Len Wiseman isn't known for making artistic films, so I'm not terribly surprised that he chose bland artwork and no iconography for this.

I really dislike the armor in the shots with the armed men. It looks like sports gear without a uniform over it. The other armor looks better to me, but even that is a bit lacking in style.

In the book, "What If Our World Is Their Heaven: The Final Conversations of Philip K. Dick", PKD tells his friend, Gwen Lee in their January 10, 1982 taped conversation, about his impressions of the film "Blade Runner". He had recently seen 20 minutes of the film at a screening attended by Ridley Scott and others.

"...the moment the film begins, you
are in the world that they created,
and it is not like a world that has
ever been created before.
Now, the way they explained it
was this: They said, in analyzing
science fiction films special effects,
they had discovered that they had
created [in classical treatment of
science fiction] un-lived-in environments.
Everything was new. The ships were
new, they had no dents on them, the
paint was new, I mean the control
rooms look like exhibits in a science
museum... Well, these, these streets
in this city, these buildings, are all
lived-in buildings. In fact, there is a
tremendous sense of dilapidation and
decay..." [Philip K. Dick, page 25]

In my opinion, this is one of the most outstanding elements of Blade Runner. Our brains passively accept the believability of the reality in that universe. Wear, tear, scuffs, skins, and scars sell reality because that is what we see everyday in our own world, consciously and subconsciously. Even in our most pristine environments, whether they be hospitals or control rooms, we passively register the scratch on the wall, or the heel scuff on the floor, and we accept them as part of our reality.

I certainly hope the producers of this new remake of Total Recall considered this and held back on showing us the full vision of their production design. A brand new, shiny car and clean, un-tattered uniform may only be a misleading teaser.

I agree Rick. worse than that though, so many of the movies that try to attempt an amount of "Grittiness" do it in an overly artistic and still almost glamorized way. At the same time our realities are becoming more sterilized and clean. Think on how stores and our products now sell this type of perfection as something we need in response to our imperfect lives, and also as a form of trust that we will not get imperfect product. The Apple store simplicity mentality. All our TV/Movie stars also seem so perfect all the time. this stuff is fine for commercials, but in the process of trying to sell an imaginative movie it defeats it's purpose.

I have a feeling that the car, and armour were not created by the films art department, but are concept vehicles and such on loan from Dodge/Chrysler, because no self respecting art department would let that logo get by them, even in an attempt at creating something generic. The vehicles also look like something to be in a concept showroom, and they have yet to show any other vehicles. I have a bad feeling about this movie, or should I say "something I might be catching on Netflix a year later", because I will not likely be going to the theater to see it.

You're right, Andy. Balance is the key to creating believable reality. The shiny and new does cohabitate with the old and worn. The extremes of the two seem so unnatural. As our world (reality) continues to evolve though, so might my definition and perception of what I deem real.

Yep, overly "Dirtying" things up is too easy sometimes. Even on a new car, there will be a little bit dirt and tar on the wheels. It would be an art to get that balance down right. I remember Car modelers at model making shows that used just a touch of dirt on the tire treads, and dust on the windshields to make them seem more in scale, and real.

In a city there would be much more grime, and even a just a few marks and scratches, on even the best taken care of vehicle. These don't even show any effects of the exhaust in the ports. As a result they look fake, as much as a CGI vehicle, if not more. Similar to the effect of uncanny valley in fake humans in CG animation and robots. Even just a few minutes in a city would have some dust and grime on them. More so they would have some wear from usage. maybe the idea they are trying to show is that police force is super highly funded and get new vehicles all the time?
