Totally crazy pics and info, Tony I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw your posts !
Keep them coming... please !!!
Fred
PS : I noticed that the name tag is missing on "your" suit, just like on the one I saw displayed in Paris a few months ago, as part of the sciencefictionarchives.com collection... Do you think it could be the same suit ?

I think it is! There are a couple of tells on the helmet which match the one I played with all those years ago (pics to follow later - I promise! )
Amazing to think it's still intact and looking good after all these years
Did you get any other pics of the suit?

Isn't there a suit in the Smithsonian? I remember there being one on display somewhere in the US.
Here is the one in France:

I was at the Smithsonian two weeks ago - if they have a suit it's not on display. |

Thanks. It may have been on one of the Hollywood tours I went on. I just remember them being lined up from different movies. |

Nope, it was very difficult to take clear pics of the space suits because they were exhibited behind a kind of metallic grid... but I'm going to ask to the owner if he could send me more pics of the suit (I could at least point him in the direction of this thread)
Anyway, I'm very happy to see it's the same suit and that he beautifully survived through the years !!!

While we wait for more photos of the helmet (come on Tony, it's been ages!) ... here are some photographs which were kindly shared with me by Andrew Ainsworth himself.
I love that last one showing the vacuum-forming machine with the master for the backpack rear half, ready to form. I think I can also see two 'chevrons' which could be the harness buckle pieces.
Mr Ainsworth tells me that the orange respirator formed part of a working - at least on some suits - ventilation system. Air was pumped through the pipe into the back of the helmet (sneakily venting through the two pipes at the front) and this helped to keep the faceplates free of condensation, which was a constant problem. _________________ Mike

OOps, sorry for the delay - I've been on holiday and it's taking me ages to catch up!
I should have the helmet details/pics up in the next day or two... in the meantime, here's a little teaser.

Fantastic! I was just looking at my photos and wondering what was in there.
Do you happen to know if that item is still on the shelves? (I don't know why I'm asking really, it's not like I'm planning to build a helmet. No, I'm really not.) Come to that... what in fact is it? Specifically I mean, for the layman. Apart from 'ventilator'? _________________ Mike

Mike - the "ventilator" is more properly called a "Cabinet Vent" - simply a plastic part that was used to cover ventilation holes in kitchen units. Used to be very popular and the DIY stores in the 80s were full of them. I haven't seen any for years, though.
Having said that, a quick Google search brings up the following link:
https://www.cwberry.com/Search.aspx?eaSearch=cabinet%20vent##
At the time I had the suit on loan I bought about a dozen of them. You're welcome to one - oh, hang on, you're *not* making a helmet, are you?
Cheers,
Tony |

Amazing. Still out there after all these years!
Heck, they're only a few pence. I'll probably get some anyway.
I almost hate to say it, but the one in the link is even more accurate than the one you have - the number of rings and the corner radius is correct. So if I do get some, you can have one for your collection. _________________ Mike

I think they look pretty... well, the same as the original!

Thanks Mike - greatly appreciated!
I know, I know, I still need to post the helmet details... so here's another teaser to keep you going:
Can you spot where the parts go?

I was wondering about those recently! You can see them fairly well in one image in the photonovel, in the fight at the end. Sadly there are no page numbers, but on the spread that begins "Amidst the whooshing sound of escaping air", top right photo.
I can't say they're my favourite bit of detail on the helmet - they seem a bit 'lazy' somehow - but as for the rest (and the backpacks) I'm struck by just how many separate parts and greeblies went into them! If you compare with the stormtrooper suits for example, where the pieces were vacuum-formed, trimmed and they were finished; these are vacuum-formed, trimmed, drilled out, wired, glued together, more vacuum pieces applied, hardware greeblies applied... they didn't skimp on the details. _________________ Mike
