Hmmmmm. Looks like I picked a good time to sign up here at Prop Summit. I have a 3-in-1 manual mill/lathe with a rotary table that has been very good to me in getting a few recent projects finished. I just picked up a Bridgeport CNC mill and am outfitting it with a rotary table(fully simultaneous machining in all 4 axis) so I can open my own machine shop. I hope to get the shop up and running in the next couple of months and can probably help some of you out with your projects. Feel free to check out my website at www.orbitalmachining.com and browse the gallery section to see what I have done with the little manual machine (I have made everything seen in the gallery and throughout the website). I will be offering manual and CNC machining, engraving, 3D CAD, and finishing services. I hope to get to work with some of you in the future.

Erik

Welcome aboard, Erik. I just visited your site and am particularly interested in your engraving capabilities. I know f a whole bunch of folks that have bought up antique Regens lighters in the hopes of replicating the one that Commander Adama gives to Apollo in the new BSG. It's engraved with the name "Joseph Adama" in a customized Diskus font. Is this something you think your engraving machine might be able to handle when you get it? If so, there's a ready made batch of customers just waiting for you.

Erik,

Welcome to Propsummit I too checked your website and you have done some wonderful work. In fact, I think I have seen some of your work around.

Anyway, as always I am honored to be among talented individuals such as those here. I hope you enjoy your stay!

Pete.
Check out this link from my website: http://www.orbitalmachining.com/html/storage.html. It is a few samples of what the engraving program can do. I just threw some old brass in the vice and let 'er rip. The company name was just a standard font I used. The other engraving pics were just samples from the program that I tried. Let me know if I can help and we can discuss the details later.

The engraved lighter looks like this:

As I mentioned, the font is Diskus. If you need it, contact Moogybaby. He's got it (he's a member here and is looking for an engraver for his lighter as well, so I'm sure he'll be willing to share).

This could be very cool, Erik.

Pete, this looks like something I could do. My machine is down right now as I had to send the computer controller in for upgrade to add a USB port so I can transfer files with my laptop. I will contact moogy and see if he has the font I can borrow. I will look for some junk lighters and give it a try when I get everything up and running again. I don't know about the black infill on the letters though, this may be left up to the individual owner as to how they want to do this.

Pete, now you just have to come up with more of those lighters

What type of a lighter is it?

1940's era Regens. Fairly readily available on ebay. Make sure you look at them carefully, though. Many have designs (diamond patterns, stripes, etc.). You want the plain chrome.

Sorry, Tiff. Didn't realize that your machine did engraving as well. Sad

My appoligies to you juno88. If you would rather tackle this project then I will gladly step aside. My original post was in regards to darkknight's comment about somebody with a lathe possibly helping out on the golden gun idea. It was not my intention to take work away from you.

Nah, I'm not a business. It's a hobby. HOWEVER, if you guys want me to change the title of this thread to reflect the lighter project, will do.

No need to do that, Tiff. I'll put on my "Community Guide" hat and move the Lighter discussion to it's own thread, leaving this one for you.

Give me a few minutes to figure out how.

Moogybaby forwarded me a screen cap as well as some extra info on these lighters. It seems some people think the 'engraving' may actually be a clear sticker that was applied and then weathered. What is the concensus here? Would you rather have real engraving or the sticker? I have asked moogybaby if he has a copy of the font I could use but I have not heard back from him yet. There seems to be two different versions of the Diskus font. A medium and a bold. Which is correct? If I need to, I can get a copy of this font from one of those online font stores. It just needs to be a true type font for my software to use it. I have also picked up a few close Regen lighters from ebay to practice on. Once I get the font and scale it correctly against the lighters, I will run a sample and post the results here.

My feelings on these things is always to lean towards what it would have been had it been real, not necessarily the quick and dirty way it may have been done for the screen. Since the lighter that was passed from Adama to Apollo would have been engraved, that's how I'd go.

I happen to have the font on my machine here at work (yes, it it TrueType). PM me your e-mail address and I'll shoot it over to you.

Yeah. Personally I would go with real engraving. I sent you a PM DK.
Thanks

Interest noted. I haven't forgotten this project. I have the font and have been playing with the correct spacing a little. I scored a couple of 'incorrect' pattern lighters to practice on but I am still waiting to get them so I can do some accurate measuring/scaling and get the G code written for the engraving. I will let you know when I get the lighters and and cut a sample.
