Just saw this new Plantronics phone for hearing and vision impaired people they are showing at CES.

Hmmm...precursor to the home vidphon?

Neat Cool ...when you think of it, the "screen-with-the-phone" machine has existed almost forever in sci-fi movies, book, etc.
From Flash Gordon to StarTrek to 1984 and BR, the machine is there.

Now we have the iphone Very Happy and a possibility of "face to face" communication.

The Geeks have won Cool ...there, I said it!

haha. well yes we have obviously surpassed the "future" telephone tech in Blade Runner, considering I am already comparing it to a low end device for the hearing impaired.

I was really just talking about how "Blade Runner" the aesthetic of that thing is.

Also, when would someone use this emoticon??

Cool, people still seem reluctant to use video phone technology even though we have had it for a while now. More people use it now than ever, but not so much daily, because who wants to answer the vid phone when they just got up, or hopped out of the shower. I think the BR ones might even have a blur filter for these moments, just as Pris could not be seen clearly when Deckard Vidphoned Sebastian.

As far as the advancement of technology beyond BR, and the lack of higher tech, I think it actually works well in the film and still does if you consider some things. BR is set in a post WW3 world, and is almost in a kind of a dark age. Any satellites may have been destroyed by the war, or are disrupted by the bad atmosphere. Also a government sponsored "land/video line" is a nice way to get cameras all over the place and into peoples homes. People are also resulting to using older tech and upgrading it because the rich people and much of industry may have gone offworld as well.

I love the look of the thing...it actually looks like a piece of machinery, as opposed to the glossy, wafer-thin look of most modern phones.

Quite a few real-life Vid-Phone were in service in France (Fred could chime in with the info...or Google Wink ) as a pilot project I think...and Andy as for the screen, you had an option of putting it on or not
