Cudos for you Mike, Collins and thank you Stephen for posting and sharing that moment with us . It's not only Bob Burns who's happy, it's also all the fans! That key is looking so good in that box |

Before I got involved with Mike, doing the key for Bob Burns, I had started my own Mu-th-er key and box.
With my key I only got as far as making the former. Rather than go down the laser cut path (which was an option) I decided to make this one by breaking down the key into simple shapes. I machined up blocks of chemical wood to those shapes and super glued them together (pictured below).
At this point I got involved with Mike, as he was looking for somebody to CNC his key. Mike's key shape became the final key so my former was made redundant.
While planning my own key I had drawn up some plans of the box using Stephen's photos from the start of this thread. So when I laser cut the ‘key former’ for Bob’s key I also cut the pieces for my box.
Here are some shots of the early construction.
And here's one a little later.
Mike kindly let me use copies of his three 3D printed parts. Due to slight differences between our boxes I had to re model the extruded part (for the side) and make mine a little longer.
I tried Mike's concept for the box clip mechanism but I couldn't get it to work. At the time I was using various springs from hair clips and although none of the springs were right, I felt that the door clip would just slip off the ball under the pressure from the right spring. So I had another look at the photos and decided to start again. Upon closer examination I wondered if there was maybe something more than a ball. In Stephen’s photos there appears to be something behind the ball shape, so with this in mind I came up with the catch you see in the attached photographs. Mike tells me Stephen described the mechanism to him as a ball with one side filed flat so I may be deviating from screen accurate.
Concept
Reality
So having resolved the catch there was still the problem of the spring.
I asked a work colleague if he would help me with the electronics. He agreed and said he’d source a solenoid. To cut a long story short, in my springs collection I had a spring for the solenoid and in his springs collection he had one that was perfect for the door. I think it was from a printer.
I was very happy when, after trimming both springs and fitting them in place, the catch and door mechanism worked perfectly.
Here's a rear view with the solenoid in position and the bulb holder to light the thumb pad at the front).
So here is my box as it stands now awaiting to be painted and the graphics applied.

I see Weyland Corp and Mu-thr serie 6000. Is it featured in Prometheus? |

A teaser !!! Great !!!
My best guess would be : your own design of the MU-TH-UR box and key with a (weathered) Prometheus vibe.

I knew that the original box+key didn't have the letters nor the Weyland logo Fred ...is just that the last pic showing the key is on a box with the MU-TH-UR letters on it. Maybe part of a project from 8th Passenger? |
