Culmination of many working hours into a very good lethal design!
What I like about this gun is that nothing is feminine about it: cold, efficacious and precise. "You shoot, you kill and you get out"
Many thanks Rick for making us witness of the process and the result. |

See Rick. Told you . . . .
The renderings themselves are gorgeous!

The parts arrived today.
These photos were taken directly after removing the parts from the box, so they are in their roughest state. The white parts were printed in a Laser Sintered Nylon Plastic. These parts did not require untra high detail, so it was more economical to have the bulk of these parts printed in this manner. The translucent parts were printed in a UV cured acrylic polymer. These parts required a much higher resolution to better capture the lettering, and therefore, cost a bit more to print. All parts have "print lines" that need to be dealt with.
The next phase of the process will be the most difficult. A combination of sanding, priming, and sculpting is required in order to dial in each part. The surfaces must be void of all print lines, but great care must be taken not to sand away the fine details, primarily the lettering. This will be achieved by priming the pieces with gray primer and then applying spot putty only to those areas that need filling, followed by light sanding. In addition to removing the print lines, there are some parts that need some additive sculpting in order to properly refine their curvilinear shape. The goal is to make the parts look machined and or stamped, but not printed.
Once I have these parts primed, I'll post additional photos. They will pop in the pics and not look so washed out.

AH, TECHNOLOGY! This is SO cool! I can hardly wait to see this project as it moves forward!
In a few years this process may seem rather commonplace as technology continues to advance. Recently I watched a vid on 3D Printing on the NAT GEO Channel - something NASA is considering for future missions. There are now high-end machines that will "print out" a 3-dimensional piece with working interlocking parts, in place and in different colors, the latter assigned by a simple keystroke. Amazing!
If you've not seen this, check it out:

Soon you might not even need to do the cleanup - although as with all works of art like this, I think creative vision and the human touch will always be paramount.
Nice work, Rick! - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |

Excellent Rick...btw, what's the grit you'll use for sanding those beauties?
And as Rep13 mentioned, the desk top 3-D machine are already there, albeit not as sophisticated as a $ 270.000 machine (Shapeway) but good enough for little pieces and small object. |

I see the level of intricate detail that 3D printing allows for and i can totally see the Star Trek Relicator in its infancy... _________________ I've had people walk out on me before, but never when i was being so charming |
