Mike Fink is sometimes talking to Gene (registered here under GKvfx).
I had the opportunity to photograph a Vid-Phone thought to be genuine mock-up for pre-prod, but was, in the end, deemed doubtfull in origin.
Gene talked to quite a few prop guys around town and said that, most of the time, they would pick up a box of greeblies at APEX or C&H and build something fast because of last minute demand/need.

The story behind the V.K. is that the video screen were NTSC system compatible, but they discovered really fast that they couldn't make them work on a PAL system in the U.K... screens were of different sizes and that's what is showing in those inserts (no V.K. logo on the face of the machine either Confused )

On another topic; if you want to download on the site, I'll send you a PM with all the instructions.

Well I guess I'm partly there.
You have to click on it to see the photo.
But there it is ... The real VK with my logos on it.

Hello Tom, to show your photo, past the link in the box then press the IMG button and it will automatically insert the proper code to have the picture appear.

The code looks like this around your picture

[img]html link[\img]

Or you can just type [img]html link[\img] around your image prior to posting.

I hope this helps in some way.

Also, make sure you do not have Disable BBCode or Disable HTML checked in your posting when posting images. I believe you may have it disabled.

Thanks,

Tom

This is the thin VOIGHT-KAMPFF logo that sits on top of the TV screen on the
Mike Fink VK unit as it appears in the file photo I took in 1981.
I hope this is of some help to you all.

best, Tom

Thank you very much for sharing with us Tom...so many details I missed or interpreted wrongly. The raised metal bar on top with the name is the cherry on the cake as well as the main plate with your logo.

The flat details on the small monitor unit is also new to us...yes, 5 baffles...check and the black is adding to the beauty of that prop. Mike Fink did a wonderful job on that prop Cool

Of course more pictures = more questions: what was the colour of the main housing? Was it a kind of metal grey or a blue-ish finish?
I heard that during the Rachael scene, the machine was "finished" with graphite, I don't know if we have the right info on that one Confused

Awesome! Always cool to see new photos like this. I've been reading your other posts Tom, great to have you here. I'm a big fan of your work Smile

I always noticed the little VK plate in the movie. I thought it was a really nice touch making it look more like a proper manufactured machine.

Amazing photos!

Please post more!

That plaque on top made it onto both versions it seems. We would have never figured that one out with the pictures we currently have.

Thanks a million!

Nick, we don't know if that top plate made it for both (I would hope so), but when you compare both machines the Mike Fink one with the U.K. one, you'll see glaring differences between the two.

One main diff. is the housing surrounding the main T.V. screen.
The Mike Fink is smaller and the right hand side is in line with the upper lights control. The U.K. one is not and since they had to change the housing, it's not as sleek looking as the one from M.F. (Mike Fink).

The small screen also are different: bigger and taller on the M.F. one, small and shorter on the U.K. prop...and let's not talk about that funny piece under the belows at the rear and the absence of the front V.K. logo (left of the main screen on M.F.'s prop, black on the U.K. prop) Confused

This movie just keeps on giving. Cool

Tom, does it warm your heart and those of your peers that items such as these are celebrated and pursued with such dedication? I always hope when putting a replica
together that the people involved originally get to see it somehow.

offworld66:
When I read the first script I thought:
Wow, love it. No one will want to see this sad film.
When I read Dicks book: too sad, but brilliant.
When I saw the first of the footage Ridley shot I thought:

O.

M.

G.

When it failed to get an audience at first run I felt so disappointed.
And when it got rediscovered...warm and proud.
And when people gathered places to discuss it...warm and proud.
When books and blogs sprung up and fans spend hours and hours
searching the film for more and more details and make things and
share things they discover..
well damn offworld, what do you think?

Of course it warms my heart.

Everytime I see the movie, I discover something new and, as a whole it's very difficult to put a date on Blade Runner.
I mean, 1982...when you see the other movies of that era it's so easy to scream: EIGHTIES Exclamation

To me BR is not a film, it's an experience in many aspects of what's makes us humans, the need to live, to belong, the emotions, our experiences of the past that shape us, dreams, philosophy, the eternal return, the UberMench, etc...

I could go on and on

joberg;
I think the best of art in this world is something
that touches our mind, heart, body and soul.
And it's usually telling us something about ourselves.

I think you are right.
And not all film is art, but I think this one is.

Yes, no doubt Tom and while you'd mentioned that you were dissapointed when you saw the public's reaction, or lack of it, when the movie came out.
The problem with Art is that the artist is the ultimate hostage; it doesn't matter if your technique is impeccable or if your work was done in one day or one year. It's the people around you and their "aesthetics" that will decide your fate and that of your work.

It looks like the whole light bar area was simply chopped off and added t the top of a larger screen. Doing so would make the rectangular shape on the refit VK the same plaque.

The housing is waaayyy different than the Mike Fink's (I called this machine the original V.K.).
When you face the prop, you see that larger part on the left-hand side of the T.V. screen; not there on the U.K. one.
Look at the size of the original large screen: you quite a lot of space on both sides of it.

The main screen on the U.K. one is huge comparatively and leaving almost no room before touching the main housing.
Original housing does not have the sides of the main housing turning near the top (a little like the Nike swoosh if you like); the original is strait from top to bottom.

And last, on the original, the whole face clading the big screen is going over the top of the main housing, while the U.K. one stops on top and is flush with the main housing. (both seems to retain the plaque with the logo that Tom made for the prop).

The back is also funny looking on the U.K. one, specially where the bellows are. There's some kind of a "platform" under the bellows that you will not find on the original V.K. It's still a mystery as why they felt the need to put that rear platform Confused

I'm still on the fence concerning the 2 little screens, I don't have enough infos/pics to make a definite comparaison.

Joberg,
Of The photos posted Aug15, 2010 , the color snapshots of the bearded
man with glasses, working at the work bench, well I think that is Mike Fink.
That is the same VK that is in my B&W close-ups...so that would be the coloring of the unit.

If you already knew this please forgive my note.

P.S. Still looking for my Polaroids.

Best,
TS
