Okay, folks. I've done some heavy editing of the worksheet, and reformatted. Hope it sets your ideas a-spin. Constructive comments welcome, as usual.

Worksheet for Nostromo Deck Plan Design Project

P.S. And a little something so help you s-l-e-e-p the time away...zzzzzzz

Thought this was cool based on a Ron Cobb illustration.

Look at how the garage area of the Prometheus lowers down to the planet surface. Possible that a similar idea could be used on Nostromo?

That looks a lot like Thunderbird 2 (the green one) on Gerry and Sylvia Anderson serie Laughing Btw, lots of designs aboard the Prometheus are looking a lot like the inside of the Nostromo...check it out on the same page Shocked

Why not... Good idea ! (even if I agree with JB, it reminds me of the Thinderbirds must admit)

Cool

This has probably been discussed to death but...

2.2.Secondary Airlock
2.2.1. Used for Kane’s burial. Other than depicted as facing aft, its location and deck level are not indicated on film.

As Kane's body flies under the Narcissus's docking position, and this is known, surely tracking back the trajectory of the body will provide an origin?

Unless they're not consistent of course Smile

A valid point, BC and thanks for raising it! I guess my question is "where on the forward hull is there an area that extends laterally far enough to allow the trajectory to be straight down the alley between main hull & outboard nacelle." I suspect the answer is, "shut up and let me enjoy the movie!" as there is no such extension. The scene does much to establish the massive scale of the ship, but I don't think they thought much further for budget or time constraints. I imagine the hatch is at the rear of the inhabited forward "head" of the hull and the escaping gases caused the body to follow the path it did. Smile. Can you say "willing suspension of disbelief?"

Keep the comments coming as you review that document. Someone's always pulling a rabbit (or observatory, eh, SJ?) out of the hat and proposing something new.

Another interesting pic....this is for the Prometheus, earlier known as the Magellan.
Notice the cranes on the underside lowering the cargo.
I thought it was good considering what we were talking about on Nostromo.

I thought it was a good idea to integrate the cranes coming from the sides of the ship, or inside some of the holds.
Anybody sees the ref from the cockpit on Prometheus and Ash observation deck/bubble on Nostromo? Wink

Nowhere near as beautiful as the Prometheus artwork, but here's the same premise applied to our Old Tug, trying to leave room on the starboard underbelly for the antenna mast (not shown in this drawing, however):

COLOR KEY:
Green: Airlock Lift
Yellow: Cargo Pod
Orange: Cargo Pod Actuator Arms

BTW, SpaceJockey: I realize now your Nostromo is longer than this one, from the Halcyon Kit instruction sheet. I wonder if my kit is as stunted... Shocked

And just for kicks, I moved the "lighting stand" from outboard of the starboard nacelle to an area closer to the one depicted by Space Jockey's blueprints.

Enjoy!

Hello, I hope no-one minds me bumping this thread, or posting here first instead of maybe elsewhere. I just wanted to say how brilliant, totally fascinating and enjoyable this thread has been to read through. I have been a fan of Alien for many years and did in fact join the forum a while back, hoping to learn lots more, but keeping track of too many forums has apparently fried my brain I think! Tried registering earlier on, only to be told the forum had someone called Noddy4000 already. Rolling Eyes Sigh...

Anyway, I also read through all 37...38? pages of the discussion about the Nostromo's design and layout yesterday afternoon and found some brilliant info and insights there as well. I've mainly got caught up in this lot because several months ago I started collecting images (and drawings when possible) of the Narc, with a view to creating a 1/20 scale model of it. I've nearly done a full set of drawings but have a sneaky suspicion they're all slightly wrong. Problem is, with looking at the Nostromo threads today and yesterday I'm sort of tempted to do it instead of...or maybe as well as...

Sadly, due to lousy health, my building pace is oh-so-very slow so all I'll be doing for a fair while yet is getting dimensions, details etc. Well, that and enjoying a forum that covers some of my all-time favourite films.

Many thanks again for having such a great forum with so much knowledge and enthusiasm. It's quite made my day. Very Happy

Martin.

Welcome, Martin! Glad to hear our ramblings gave you some enjoyment. They certainly have me, too. I'd be glad to add any comments or suggestions to the working document you referred to. Meantime, enjoy, and good luck with your modeling adventures....

Welcome Martin..

Take a look over here: http://www.airart3d.com/?p=1274

this guy did a great job with CG version of the Narc. and has started a VERY detailed version of the Nostromo as well. Might be willing to help you out?

enjoy, Steve

Many thanks, guys. Glad to have rediscovered the site and realised just how much is here.

I'm also glad to have finally got into some kind of gear to try and move this project on. I have about 8 non Alien related builds on the go, which I work on when I can, but the Narc has really got under my skin again recently - in fact it took me about a week, all told, to work up the plan, side and front elevations for the model and it was only when I had started on the bottom and rear views that I discovered something wasn't right. So I'm going to start from scratch and try and nail the dimensions properly, then figure out templates etc.

I'll gladly ask if I get stuck anywhere as I have a feeling this will be a tricky build for me and I'll need all the help I can get! I'll certainly post pics when I can Smile , I'll post the next lot of plans for sure as the present set is not so hot.
