Skin Job 66,
As I was flipping through an early script (Hampton's July24, 1980) that Ridley sketched in, I found this note and sketch:
Because of all the discussion of pipes and cig packs, I thought you might find it interesting.

TFS Tom and yes, Ridley loves those cigarettes with yellow paper that are both in Alien and BR. One of my Hugarian friend was always smoking them |

Very nice Rep13!
Far better in finish than any cover I was able to do in BR.
Always a pressure to put something in that TV screen (the "o" of MONI)
But a reward when you resist. What I might not resist was to tease Tom with two different lower case e's like I had awkwardly done...and only you had noticed and toiled over.
Refreshing cover rep.
Can't wait for FASH2018.

Thanks, all. The devil IS in the details.
We have the luxury these days of creating with the Mac/PC in Illustrator and Photoshop to a level and at a speed not afforded by 1980 low tech.
I'm no expert, but I am a student of typography/calligraphy. I have to say, the ride was at least as much fun as the destination, doing these covers. Once created and output, the hunger for more is back.
Finding the history of the fonts - the transitional omisions (moving from 80's typehouses to online catalogs) was an interesting eye-opener. A challenge I seldom encounter in my day-to-day of point and click font shopping.
Yes, I struggled with the "TV screen" on MONI, tempted to place my Zhora wireframe within it, but to be true to the original won out. That said, knowing my past experience with the limitations of Letraset® and the like, I always assumed your decision to switch from one letter to it's optional alternate was driven simply by the number of letters available on the sheet - a problem I often struggle with, back then. If I were re-creating a exact duplicate of your covers (which is still tempting), I would adhere to this limitation, but I strove for continuity, hence the result.
And thanks, Tom - Now to accept your challenge, I must find a proper "figure" for the earlier FASH issue . . . an element I found challenging in creating the illustration of the siren on your HORN issue -

Nicely done, retrograde!
Just this weekend I worked on a clean-up of the clipart for the pack, in case anyone should want to up "update" their version. I will post it on the Props thread.

I have three or four books published by NASA in the 70's about space colonization. They feature both color plates and black and white images of space colonies, asteroid "farming" etc. Would these be of interest to folks as page filler for Blade Runner/Alien magazines?
Would it be worth making a generic set of interior pages that could go with any magazine cover, or should we choose one magazine and actually try to fill it with the articles mentioned on the cover (probably not HORN though!)? I see benefits to both approaches. |

Interesting thoughts Retrogarde...I think, as you said, both could be possible of course, it's just that one would necessitate a greater effort than the other: i.e. writing the article pertaining to the headliner on the cover... |

FALSE ADVERTISING
Although real magazines (and so the print ads along with them) seem to be dwindling with the impact of the internet - to a point where they may no longer be so prevalent in the year 2019, I think Retrogarde's idea is worth exploring further.
Based on that, having created a few ads already, I've started a new thread "PAPER PROPS - Magazine Advertising in the BR Universe".
Hopefully others will contribute thoughtful creations promoting the services, practices and products of the BR Universe. I will be posting larger versions of my earlier ads, as well as new ones.
