So, I thought I'd start a thread for the new grips project.

For the moment, I'm only looking at making darker amber grips. Other versions may follow, but just amber for now.

I'm looking into this in some detail now, but still waitiing for my kit to arrive.

I'm making new masters, from scratch.

Can someone please look at the supplied grips, and tell me how many diamonds-to-the-inch the grip pattern is?
Needs to be measured on the diamonds' long axis, top to bottom.

It would be good to cross reference with Sidkit and Richard's models too, to reach a consensus of the ideal number.

Also a close up of the pattern, showing the orientation would be really helpful.

Thanks very much,

Karl

I'd like to help you in all I can, pattern and shapes on Tome are suoerbly crafted, but I rather have some more accurate in color and shapes.

My blaster just arrived today, I'll let you know later.

I have a resin copy of the original stunt blaster. I may check the diamond pattern on them too, if you're interested

Yes, that would be great, thank you.
Let's get back to the source. Good idea.

Thanks,

I would be VERY interested in a clear set.
PM me your email, and I'll send you detailed photos of all the versions.
Black, W-con Pro & "pee-Yellow".
I know you only plan on amber @ the moment. But I'll hope clear will
be on the horizon.
I assume you prefer metric dimensions?

On the stunt blaster:

5 diamonds per inch, top to bottom. FYI, the diamond patterned area is totally flat and parallel to the inner flat side of the grip.

Spinner 44,

Many thanks for that.

Yes, I was aware the textured area was flat, but nice to have it confirmed again.

5 diamonds per inch?
That seems like awfully big diamonds. I just checked the Sidkit grips and they look to have around 18 diamonds per inch.

I am coming up with 12 diamonds per inch on my largest stunt blaster measuring the long way. I would look into standard grip pattern cutters that are close to 1/12th or 1/16th of an inch. The width of the cuts I am pretty sure are 1/16'.

From doing a little research, the Biggest size seams to be about 1/16th, and then go to 1/32nd of an inch.

Quote:
Checkering is measured by the number of lines per inch that are cut when forming a pattern. Two-, three-and four-line spacing cutters are available in tools that cut 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 32 lines per inch (lpi). Single-line cutters are available that will cut lines at 60-, 75-, and 90-degree angles; These are normally used to finish a pattern to full depth.

I'll take pix & scan them into my auto-cad. That I can scale them & tell you
the exact size as well as the pitch angle. 100% dead on.

Spinner 44,

Do you have a picture of the diamond pattern?
I'd be really interested to see the difference.

Joberg,

We're a good way off from there at the moment. I need to get hold of my kit to be sure I can get a perfect fit, I need to make a new set of masters from resin blocks, have the diamond pattern laser engraved on plates, cut and shape the plates to drop onto flats on top of the grip models, then shape them into the grips. There's a lot of fettling and finishing.
It's a long job Smile

Thanks, I appreciate that.

I'm on the case, so there will be more news as it happens.

Rich sent me some great pictures of the original grips, Thanks Rich!.
If you guys are OK with it, I'll base the new grip models on the original grip patterns.
I think it best to source the information from the originals.

Still waiting for my bloody kit to show up!

Smile
