Although it did not get great reviews I enjoyed "Oblivion" and thought it took equal (if not better) advantage of the vistas shot in Iceland than its predecessor, "Prometheus".

And while the weapon design was not ground-breaking, I found Cruise's "handgun" interesting . . .

Does anyone have any information regarding this prop? While there are vids about the bubble ship and the sets, I've found little, if anything online about the weapons and aside from coverage in a few magazines, as yet there is no indication that a "Making Of" book will be published.

I too was interested by the rifle/pistol used in this movie. I know of 2 threads on RPF about these. So far, the rifle has been ID'd but the pistol appears to be built up from scratch:

Beautiful weapons on that movie and you're right, a few people on the RPF have worked on the movie and the gun is a scratch-built prop.
One day, we'll have the necessary info to do it also Wink

Thanks, Solo!

There's definitely some interest over there. From the discussion it seems that while the rifle is based on an existing weapon, the jury's still out on the pistol. Based on an existing pistol? A target pistol? A power tool? A lot of back and forth at the RFP, with many thinking it's a new creation, using 3D digital printing. That would be my guess, but then perhaps only for parts of it . . .

Just wish there was more verifiable info. Anyone?

Thanks again for the links. - R13

Sorry, nothing new form me.

I would agree it was custom made though, the rake of the grip is extreme for an automatic pistol (if that's what it's intended to be) actually dangerous to shoot. looks like it bites Smile

The holster looks weird. Backwards.
Doesn't look too secure.
Maybe some Sci-Fi technobollocks holds it in there. Magnatomic adhesion maybe Smile

So. Another impractical, practical prop . . .

Still, looks cool in the movie. Confused - R13

Guy on the RPF thread said it was completely designed and built for the movie, not based on any actual gun.Was getting frustrated as others continue to speculate what gun was used! Very Happy

I read through the discussion on the RPF until I couldn't read any further.

As you say, one guy stated (rather confidently) that it was a pure creation, not based on any existing object (weapon, power tool or toy), but then another quickly questioned just who he was, what were his credentials and where was his proof? The point then continued to be discussed, back and forth. With several good theories on both sides of the argument, there still appeared no end in sight. The discussion seemed headed toward . . . oblivion.

At that point, I gave up . . . for now.

Perhaps more factual information will surface, but until we see more definitive reference, or a promotional video addressing the build, I will contain my enthusiasm (eager as I may be).

It might be based (as a starting design point) on an air gun...but that stops there.
As you said Dave, this weapon is "biting" (wouldn't want to shoot with it).

The angle of the grip is weird also and Karl mentioned the holster (don't get me started on that topic )...

Hopefully the Blu Ray release will have some extras that will give some clearer info, I like the look of both the pistol and the rifle very much.

The grip angle reminds me of the old pistol muskets.
They went up to pretty big calibers but still looked
very uncomfortable to shoot.

Actually Don, I fired an old duel pistol my Father had (English making) and while the angle of the grip seems odd, I found it comfortable enough to shoot with it...as far as "recoil" is concerned it's not bad, most of the weight is in the middle and toward the front (caliber was substantial), it gave me a kick and a lot of smoke but all in all it was a pleasant experience

Hard to say without actually holding the actual pistol, but armed with CAD technology and with all the research, thought and design that goes into film today, I find it hard to believe props might continue to be designed without taking into consideration an end user, especially on any high-concept sci-fi like this.

He seemed to be able to handle it OK, albeit for the brief time it was on screen.

Here's all I could find.
http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Oblivion#Custom_Pistol
My opinions only, but I found Jack's personal weapons completely unconvincing and uninteresting. Too simplistic to be believably functional - like something out of a '50's sci-fi movie or the original Star Trek. Totally kitschy..

I think the design of the weapons are in line with the general look of the movie...but I prefer to see something a little more interesting...like the Chemrail from Elysium Wink
