Excellent finds there Colin...as for the steel parts, might've been customized for the weapon by the boys in the studio?

Very cool, especially the explanation for the odd "cheese wedge" on the top.

Thanks retrogarde. I havent been able to find the lighter on the web. Not that I need one!

I took a gamble and ordered the gas fitting I wanted. It arrived yesterday.

It fitted!

Here it is

And on the bottle

I've been drawing up a CG version of the flamethrower to plan how everything fits together.

The bottle and valve fit in the space a treat. So I just need to find a short piece of 3" steel pipe to make sure it all fits in reality.

I'll post some CG renderings later.

Fantastic research and update Colin, BRAVO once again !

(It's weird to think that without eBay, we wouldn't be able to build these kind of projects...)

Nothing to see with your build but I thought you'd enjoy it, I picked this photo of Sigourney from ALIENS on Propstore of London site yesterday... It looks like it was taken just before she had her new haircut done for the film (yeah, the one that makes her look like a granny) and the photographer tried to capture something that would have an A L I E N vibe (same haircut as in the first film, flamethrower in hand, set that could remind of the one were Bret is killed) :

Great photo Fred. I never liked what James Cameron did to Ripley's character in Aliens, but understand why!

She looks like the old Ripley there.

Okay here are are the CG renderings I promised.

The Sievert valve seems to sit in the right place in the CG mock-up.

I have the right side detail pretty much sorted now. I just have to draw up the bit of detail on the front (half) Hornby Pier.

I have started drawing up the left side detail and will post a rendering at a later date. But here's what I plan to do with the interior construction. It will be a mix of steel, aluminum, MDF and urethane resin modelboad.

Every unit as far as I can see is different. The firing versions definitely evolved through production. The one Sigourney Weaver is seen with on the lawn is probably the first one. This is the same one Dallas uses (the one with the hole in the grip). This one has no cut out for the valve and no exposed tube on the right side, running to the emitter. However it does have other visible differences!

I think the 'gaffer tape' around the end of the rear tube was to hold the fuel bottle in place. It was probably just cut when they changed the bottle and some new tape applied and painted.

I'm getting closer to starting my build. Once I source what metal I need I can start. I want to build the metal structure first and then build round that.

As for now "I'm still collating"...

Colin, look at what I have just found here (aside a pair of binoculars) :

Did you notice the long hoses attached to both of them ?

Cool

Good one on the extinguishers (with their hoses painted white)...as for the binocs, the hose is coming from behind that big tube/column Wink

Fred,

I see the round bottom pony tanks. Looks like they have different valves and larger air hose.

Like joberg says they look like fire extinguishers. They well could be.

When Lambert and Parker are looking for coolant they handle lots of small tanks of different shapes and sizes. Good dressing for any spaceship interior.

Pro Mod has identified a kit part on the flamethrower.

Quote:
Thanks Colin,
I new there had to be an easier way!!

Sorry to go off topic, but on page 73, Dalla's flame thrower has two sets of smoke bottles from the Tamiya 8 Rad armoured car which I've never noticed before and which are useful in helping to scale the unit.

Phil

I found some pictures of the kit online, on the sprues. I think this is the part Pro Mod is talking about.

I'm thinking I should have another look on the Narcissus model building thread on the RPF. I might spot some other parts as they were probably using the same kits.

Worth a shot.

Thanks Phil. Every bit of information helps.

I embarrassed to say I hadn't even noticed the suspension part!
The part I noticed is underneath and to the right of the half drum.
It's part No 10 & 43.
The part is actually glued face down.
Do you have the kit? If not I'll measure the part and post the dimensions.
Both parts are used in the recess underneathe the Narcissus.

This is the part with dimensions for those who are unfamiliar with the kit.

Thanks Pro Mod. That's really great. Two parts identified.

Thanks for the size ref. I'm not familiar with kit parts so that's of real help.

I may see if I can get hold of a kit. It's the 1/35 scale I presume. I'll make a guess they are sort after if they appear on the Narcissus.

I had a quick look online. They are not cheap. Do you know off hand if Tamiya still make the kit?

Yes it's the 1:35 scale kit.
It was used extensively to dress the models and model sets.

I'll look if I have any spare ones I can send you.

To me the one on the left looked a little like the one on the back of flamethrower... The hose then could have been used to connect this tank to the emitter maybe ?

...

Oh well, you're probably right, they could just be extinguishers after all...

Fred I did have a look on the Blu Ray at that scene. When I paused the frame the bottles definitely had rounded bottoms. The hoses look like compressed airlines and connectors. Which are a little large I think.

But I'm making this up as a go! I'm not even 100% sure the rear bottle is a propane can.

Comments and idea's always welcome though.

After Pro Mod indentified the kit parts and posted the sizes I took joberg's advice and went straight to the drawing board! I mocked up this 3D version of the 'smoke bottles' to drop into my CG model.

Here's a wider shot with some of the other details sketched in. Everything is a work in progress.

I'm really hoping to get the body-parts laser cut this week and my first bits of metal for the internal structure. The reason I keep putting it off is because I keep changing my mind about stuff.
