Is it the real Sharpie brand or something else? I know that markers from Japan are of a better quality...some markers are also made for calligraphy and are using a rechargeable ink cartridge (from Japan also).

Maybe that could be the answer

Bwood - that actually looks pretty good for a first pass! Mine has the same bronze sheen (as opposed to blue), but my photos were shot under fluorescent light, so the bronze is canceled out and the finish looks quite balanced. Keep in mind that I layered the Sharpie on my parts and gave them a serious polish & buff. I agree that it's a very thin, fragile finish, so that's why I recommended a non-alcohol based wax sealant.

Joberg - I'm not familiar with any Japanese permanent marker brands. Perhaps you could enlighten us!

Joberg, it is a real Sharpie marker purchased at a real office supply store. Tell me more about those Japanese markers if you will..

Bwade, my experience is that fluorescent lighting is what is accentuating the bronze caste. The Sharpie color looks blacker under daylight or flash photography..

Heck, it was a theory... My garage shop T8 tubes are pretty old and cast a yellow light. Either way, hope the Sharpie finish grows on you. Have you tried polishing and layering yet?

From my experience, Sharpies have a slight purple tint to them.

Agreed, clutch. Is this true of all permanent markers?

Sharpies, like most 'permanent' markers, are very dark purple or blue. Never true black.

Almost all I've used over the years have that slight 'gasoline on water' rainbow haze going on.

It might be worth looking at 'Pantone' (it's a colour matching system, not a brand as such) permanent markers used by professional illustrators, as they should be true carbon black and not blue or purple.

I visited a few forums this morning and found a few opinions regarding "blackest black markers."
Staples Dura Mark
Sanford Hi Impact
Papermate W10
If none of these produce satisfactory results, I will then try the "art supply" markers like Letraset, etc.
Thanks to all for the help.

I believe I have found a solution for this issue. Staples Dura Mark appeared black under various lighting conditions with none of the purple/bronze overtones. I have included a couple of photos where one half is original Sharpie and the other half and outer edges is Dura Mark.

Sorry guys, I forgot to put the brand of Japanese permanent marker I use (and always used): Pentel GFKP Japan.
They're made for Japanese calligraphy and come with rechargeable cartridges. Their black is darker than any other type of markers out there.

The first pass will be dark with a dark purple hue, several subsequent passes will do the trick. Be careful as to what kind of sealant you'll use on it. Matt is working very well (Krylon).
Good luck

This is just beautiful work, bwade wanna. Very impressive! And a Sharpie? Who'd a thunk?

I just received one today. Reading this thread again made me want to mention that it came with the Weaver knob installed. I replaced it with the screw, wrapped it back up and put it back in the box. Laughing

The important thing is that both versions are included and we can swap them out to our heart's content.

Again, loving' what you've done.

Nah KC, swapping takes too much work. The solution is much easier: buy another gun and affix the slotted screw on it, while the other has the Weaver one...see?

Hi nice work gun looks great . But I'm curious as this gun is a limited edition and now that you have altered the blaster from its original factory condition do you feel you have devalued the prop by doing this?
