Posted: Wed Feb 18, 2015 4:42 am Post subject: Cosplay/Economy holster interest? |
|
|
I've been working on a new holster design for BR blasters.
I realize times are hard and many people can't really justify almost $200 on the current models I offer for the Coyle/Tomeno/Offworld, etc.
They are fully suede lined, custom dyed, hand stitched, and take a long time and a lot of work to make.
I was thinking of making a general purpose cosplay/economy/generic holster, very firmly in the BR Universe, for use at cons and prop parties, etc.
It won't be another copy of the Deckard holster, but more of one from the same family/designer/factory.
The features I propose:
1. Styled in the manner of the Safariland/Deckard holster. So from the same 'factory'.
2. Single thickness, unlined.
3. 3.5mm top grain cowhide.
4. Hand stitched with waxed Polyester 'tiger thread'.
4. Chestnut brown in colour.
5. One size fits all major blaster models currently available.
6. Thumb break retainer strap for security.
7. Larger, more practical belt loop.
8. Choice of side or cross-draw.
9. Wet-formable by you (with tutorial), to your specific model.
10. If enough interest, a custom marking stamp will be made for the back.
I'm aiming to be able to produce these for $100 plus shipping.
Any interest you guys? |

I have seen an early prototype and helped size it to fit my models, and as such this will be the Only Holster I will be able to indorse for use with my models.
I have always warned that the holsters can harm my models, the real springs used can rip off the side rod and some paint.
OR Worst drop your model. I wore a spring type at a con and had a blaster work it’s self out and hit the floor.
This design can help prevent all of these problems.
Of course any holster will cause holster ware, so you do need to allow for that, this will be a lot less that any spring type, but if you going for a real world look then these will only add to your model’s look.

Thanks Rich,
Indeed Rich was instrumental in getting the sizing right, to allow the holster to comfortably fit his metal models. Also, he did some work in helping me get the placement of the thumb break snap right.
Thanks again Rich.
I'm working on a first prototype to show.

I hope so, Andy
The purpose of the proposed holster is to allow people a more cost effective alternative to the $200 holsters without sacrificing design, function or security.
These holsters, if I can make it happen, will retail at around half the price of the Deckard holsters which I already supply and Phil and I both retail.
The leather is top quality, full grain, oak tanned steer hide, but the holster isn't lined. Unlined means far less labour per holster.
Both the Deckard holster and the SG holster I supply are fully lined. It's where the bulk of the labour cost is.
There's no internal spring to damage delicate blasters.
There's a thumb break strap designed into the holster so that, even if the wearer were upside down, the blaster won't fall out.
Also, I'm designing the holster to look like part of the 'Family' or holsters as the Deckard.
I'm taking design cues from the holster in the movie, but adding a spin. For example, the belt loop is a similar shape to the Deckard but will take a full 1.5" width belt.
The holster can be ordered in a choice of left or right hand model, left or right hand cross-draw, or left or right hand side draw.
Stay tuned for pics of the prototype. I hope to have it finished by tomorrow sometime.

Ok, here we go
This is the prototype of the 'GP Holster' I finished today.
I designed it to enclose more of the blaster for safety, and the holster's lines follow those on the blaster better.
The combination of the thumb break strap and belly gusset panel guarantee the holster's security. The blaster cannot fall out.
The stitch detail echoes the butterfly spring pocket on the Deckard holster, as does the general shape and styling.
As mentioned, the belt loop is now a sensible size and will take a 1.5" belt easily.
If we get enough interest, I'll have an special impression stamp made for the belt loop.
Comments welcome.

Looks great to me for a great cosplay holster...
I know I will want one so I can carry one of my models.

Thanks Rich,
You're first on the list!
I wanted it to be more than just a Cosplay holster, so it obeys all the real world holster rules of safety, security and accessability while hopefully still feeling like it belongs in the BR Universe.
Comments welcome...

Which is why I all for it..
I have already torn off a side rod and damaged a $1500.00 Blaster trying to use one of the movie accurate holsters, and I am one of the few that can afford to take that hit (pun intended)
Still I had to replace a receiver side cover and rod and a ammo housing.
Once I get one of these : Next I will need a coat and so on.

One of the things I worked on with Rich, is to get the snap on the thumb break positioned to avoid the sight rod.
To do that, it's positioned way up high on the left rear shoulder of the receiver, out of harm's way.
The thumb break tab is quite discrete, tucked away at the back there, but your thumb falls naturally on the specially stiffened tab when you reach for the grip.
The blaster draws quick and clean.

These are hand cut and hand stitched from premium full grain, oak tanned hide.
The thread is a special waxed braided Polyester called 'Tiger thread'. Incredibly strong and totally rotproof. Used to stitch together tactical and riot gear.
I can also supply these hand made holsters in black and Bladerunner saddle tan.
$99.00 each plus actual postage.

I'll make a Bladerunner classic saddle tan holster to show, perhaps that might help generate some interest. |

I believe I have the balance between functionality and BR styling right, but without feedback, I simply can't be sure.

Thanks for the input, Joberg.
I think purists will like the 'Deckard' colour scheme better.
At first glance it's close enough to the movie holster that you wouldn't necessarily spot the differences.
The thumb break strap adds a world of security for your blaster. It simply cannot fall out.
I've always thought the movie version was lacking in a couple of areas. the first is that it was very undersized for the blaster. The second was that it simply didn't work. It didn't hold the blaster securely.
I copied the dimensions from the screen used holster when I designed my Deckard holster and so didn't address the size issue, in favour of keeping it canon.
Personally, I find the Chestnut GP very pleasing, and the black will be very businesslike, but I'm not planning on making a black prototype...
Anyone got anything to add? |

I like the closes to film color, but can see the other colors as portraying some other Blade Runner, especially when your unable to carry off being Decard like a lady Blade Runner...

The design will also adapt very well to a shoulder holster rig. |

YOUR BABY NEEDS A CRADLE . . .
For whatever reason, some here may not have recognized the value Karl has always offered. Until now, some here just may not have been able to afford one. But friendship aside, Karl just does excellent work. And hand stitching - you can't beat that! I think 'Leather' is the guy's middle name.
Every piece of his I have is top notch. What he offers here is a bargain, in my opinion. I don't think anyone will be disappointed.
After all, you can't pick one of these up at your local gunshop. At least not until about 2019 . . .
