Coming up on auction are a set of original drawings that were used to illustrate the second printing of H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds. These were drawn by Henrique Alvim Correa.
Wells was dissatisfied with the original artwork commissioned for the first edition. Correa however, was so taken by the book that he created these and presented them to Wells, unsolicited. Wells was stunned and used them in the second printing and in other editions.
I've always liked these illustrations. They really capture the look and feel that Wells expressed so well in that book.
