Posted: Tue May 19, 2015 7:22 pm Post subject: Blade Runner: Replica Graphics |
|
|
The short, short version: I've been making replica BR vector graphics lately. Have a look: http://gndn.wordpress.com/tag/blade-runner/
The long version:
Adobe has recently created a cross-platform 'library' feature. I thought it would be useful to build my own libraries, using some of my pre-existing vector graphics, so I don't have to go digging for oddly filed files any more. (Where did I save that? Was it in "Fan-Made Misc" or "Concept Art"? What version was the most recent? Was that on my HD or USB? etc.)
I started out with Chappie stuff, which then became all of Weta's sci-fi graphics. Which then led to a library for Serenity / Firefly, and Jurassic Park, and Total Recall 2012, and (of course) BR.
Once I exhausted my pre-existing inventory of graphics, I began to vectorize new stuff, and search for more production material & behind the scenes shots... Which led me (inevitably) back to Propsummit. Where I fell into a 20 page thread starring Tom Southwell (Hi Tom!). Suffice to say, it was time well spent
I was also pleased to discover that there is still 'new' information coming to light, mainly thanks to Mr. Southwell's archives and willingness to share. My BR library is now up to 158 items, including material from Syd Mead's concept art, Ridleygrams, (and, god forbid, a little non-canon material!) and growing.
Who am I? I spend most of my time over at the RPF, and those of you who are 'cross platform' may know me as "Mike J." I am a thirty-something graphic designer and movie buff. I run GNDN.wordpress.com as a general movie props reference blog. You can also see my work on Flickr & DeviantArt:

Further bulletins as events warrant.
Everybody looking forward to the 33rd anniversary?
-MJ

Thank you, guys; thought this really should be more of a 'welcome back.'
I was able to get some more stuff done today and yesterday, so I'll be posting another update tonight.
I have some 'graphical archaeology' that I'd like to post, but I have to compile it first. May take some time.

Updated again this morning. Approaching 200 symbols!
Spent a few hours over these past few days making a Metrokab card. Started with my blimp card for dimensions & tiny text, but rapidly evolved. Scoured the internet for photos of Metrokabs that show the decals. Pretty proud of myself that I was able to recreate not only the Metrokab wordmark (which is annoyingly idiosyncratic) but also the checkered stripe, and the way it curves smoothly & warps the checkers.
I made up some disclaimer text for the back. Slapped on a row of tiny logos I thought would make sense (some from BR, some real). Added a nice signature panel. Used one of Tom Southwell's arrows for the front. Got some Japanese on it, added a 'smart chip' and some more logos from BR & the real world...
Tried to keep it looking Blade Runner-y: not using modern fonts, not using full-color images, sticking to 'cruder' methods, plain, older fonts, only a handful of colors, etc. Regrettably, I currently lack the capital to get it printed on a real plastic card. Perhaps in the future.
Here's a link to my 'blimp card': actually a special Vid-Phon card that allows the user to access the cellular & wi-fi repeaters on the blimps:

Thanks, guys.
Been doing some digging over the past few days on the 'hard hat guys,' in case you haven't checked my blog lately.

Thank you. Made a discovery today, but I'll have to write it up tomorrow. I will let you all know when I do.

ID'ed some background extras' patches today / yesterday. Interestingly, these are 'off-the-shelf' real world US Army patches (some sideways), not something Tom Southwell drew up... Mostly. Didn't ID them all...

Somebody tell the costuming forum guys.

Pretty sure I grabbed that from the special features disc from the five disc set. I did not, however sit through 3 hours of Dangerous Days, so there may be more pics out there.

Thanks to a comment by Tom Southwell, we now know a little more about some of the obscure logos in BR:
"Aggie was designed for gaffer Richard (Aggie) Agular a lighting gaffer and partner of cinematographer Laslo Kovaks. (PaperMoon, Woman In Red, Radio Flyer, and a hundred others) just another logo pulled from my book to "busy up" BR. Nancy logo for my mom, Fritz Strasser was head of hiring prop men at Paramount in 1973, hired me to work on The Godfather Part II."
Thank you very much, Tom!
