Just a heads up that PropStore of London has acquired the HERO (read: working) Vid-Phon and has it on display at San Diego Comic Con.

Go forth and photograph.....

I'm super excited, but the only pics I've managed to find are tiny. It's in the bottom right hand corner of a big case.

I did see that my 'yen-sign' ad replica is inaccurate (no surprise there) and in fact is a clipping from a newspaper or magazine. And there are others on that side of the machine.

It's the big, wall mounted unit that Deckard uses to call Rachel.

This particular prop is the hero prop. It was the only one with a working monitor installed. There is a little roller switch installed in the card slot that activates the main lights when the card is inserted. This unit also features buttons that still depress. The counter is unique in that they didn't have time to install an hours/min/seconds chip, so the counter counts up to 10's/100's/1000's.......

Without giving away who has had this since filming (it may come out later if all the parties wish), this piece has been squirreled away for 30+ years and is in fantastic shape for a prop. The base plates are aluminum and wood, there's a metal hanger in the back for mounting it to the set. It's covered with a vac-form styrene skin that only has minor cracks/chips. Near as I can tell, all the graphic add ons are still there (though they may have changed them around as the props got moved from set to set). The little red crosshairs in the center of the screen are still there (though faded) - they were added by Ridley himself with a red Sharpie as the set was being dressed.

I believe there is one other BG Vid-Phon unit in private hands in Japan. (ii've only seen pictures of it). The other four BG units are in storage, essentially. (I got to check them out a while ago.). I can't comment on the one in Japan, but I can tell you that the other four are definitely background units. The graphic on the front is the same, but they don't have actual monitors in them. Not sure if the counters work (I doubt it) or if they light up. Their conditions vary from just OK to poor due to them being in long-term storage for a period of time. The one Propstore got is THE hero, in cherry condition (for a prop), and the provenance is impeccable. I'll be curious to see what it sells for.

I imagine that Propstore will be promoting it as the auction draws near, so there will likely be a better chance of seeing it up close. SDCC is its debut, so to speak.

I wish we could save these pictures for builds.

I can take screencaps of them easily enough.

There's no way to upload them to the board, though, is there? Like at the RPF? Otherwise I may just throw them up on my blog.

Oh, that what you meant! If you're using Google Chrome, an easy way to get around not being able to save pictures is to right click on the picture (or, if that doesn't work, the page itself) and then click on "Inspect Element." Then you can search through the code for the picture's source.

Or like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvslJ7cyPDU

Anyways, here's the pictures. Sorry they're so big; I'm not sure how to make images smaller:
