I started working on a new blaster kit...

Blued the receiver today.... and the result is.... weird!

It almost looks like... animal print... a weird uneven finish.

Does anybody have experience with this?

I'm starting to suspect that it's the bad or impure metal..?? This could be caused by bad quality pewter, right?

That would be my bet, looks like it is a mix of metals, who's receiver is it?

How did you prep the metal?

Sanding and degreasing is a must with any metal model.

It's a sidkit of some kind, looks close to the world con edition... a guy named Comprarobe sells them om eBay (I don't know who he is in real life) and some time ago my curiosity got the better of me and in spite of the controversy with this particular kit I got one.

I'm not overall impressed with the quality. I guess you get what you pay for Confused

It seems that the metal reacts differently to the bluing in different places. I sanded and polished the receiver to a chrome like finish and degreased it several times before bluing. I used Birchwood Casey's Perma Blue Paste. It's possible that it's not potent enough to get an even finish so I ordered the liquid from the same brand... On the other hand the revolver drum gets a nice even finish.

Any other suggestion to what I might try? Other than throwing it in the bin Evil or Very Mad

Well I would resand it and then skip bluing and use a little pewter black and go for a accurate look of raw steel.

That should work.

I blacken the metal and then scotch bright it back to like mix of black so that it looks like real steel, pewter is too silver to look like steel.

Then I use metal polish to blend and smooth this finish...repeat as needed/wanted to get the look you want.
