From the Files. blurring the line between two films of the same genre and decade, an ad for OUTLAND's Mining Colony on the Jovian moon, Io.

I have always liked the film, in spite of its obvious flaws. While it has some imagined similarities and a vision of a similarly depressing future, it has no direct link to 'Blade Runner'. No androids or robots, and unlike other films of the genre, no aliens. But in some respects one can imagine that connection, if only in the central character's profession and the seedy side of the "frontier space" environment.

'Blade Runner' offers a wealth of possibilities to exploit, whether it's the sushi bars and nightlife, technologies like the VK machine, the newsstands with their various offerings, Animoid Row or the Tyrell Corporation.

'Outland' - with the obvious tie to being "offworld" - has a bit less, but one can imagine those connections, whether its the heavy-handed corporate influence of Con-Am, the logos and props or other unseen possibilities. The strip clubs and nightlife with its questionable offerings, seems the main distraction to an otherwise boring iife, so it's obvious fodder. .

And at one point in the last decade or so there was talk of a remake, that got shelved. Might've been interesting . . . Confused

Always loved "Outland" and the close connections to Alien and, to a certain extend, Blade Runner
