Thanks Colin for all of this work Wink It never gets easier with this prop Rolling Eyes
There's so many pitfalls to mind when building it (as you have discovered)

I'd wished that those blueprints were done at a 1:1 scale, but I had my doubts at the very start.

What those are giving us is more details in areas I hadn't seen before...that's all. Back to the drawing board.

I noticed this hand written 90% on one of the copies of the photo of the machine.

But 90% of what?

10% of 360 would take it up to around 400mm.

Don't know Confused This was photocopied...maybe shrinking the blueprint by 90%?
It's certainly not 1:1...

I think I'm done for the time being.

I've come full circle (again) and ended up with a width of 430mm based on the arm and head assembly.

I don't really want to make a unit 430mm wide because to me that seems too big now.

But I think jobeg has a point about the scale of those blueprints.

Here are a couple of work in progress screen shots of the CGI head.

To try and get the size of everything down I went for a 3/8" rod with a 3/4" collar.

But like I said its all WIP.

One day Colin, one day we'll have the real 1:1 scaled blueprints and all of our questions/challenges will be answered

Quick question guys. As there are two main models as far as i can ascertain from here, why are most drawings on the one that is not the close-up shot oftentimes popular when referencing the machine?

My preference is the on that seemingly does not have the VK logo on the front and looks a bit tighter in general.

The production shot shows the one that most people are building.

WHy is that?

PS do we think the LED bars from Kingbright are the same ones used in teh original prop? SO would they be the most accurate example of taking a piece to measure up the rest of the device?

MarkusKirsch: good questions

The U.K. V.K. was heavily transformed to fit the big screen in, so they could play that vid of the eye in SECAM format (European) while the original was fitted for the NTSC format (North American).

Doing so, and since the original NTSC screen was smaller than the SECAM, they had to re-do an entire top housing, increasing the front hole (therefore loosing the front V.K. logo (which didn't fit between the small red light bar and the "drawer") and also going away with the slant on the left hand side of the machine.

I believe that the overall width of the prop wasn't changed; it's just that with that big screen, it seemed "tighter" than the original one.

Also, now since the front screen was larger, but also higher, they had to add a thick platform under the bellows to arrive to the same look as the original, i.e: the raising of the bellows was, originally, past the main screen/housing in heights.

As for the light bars...well, it seems that the measurements given to us by LearnByMaking are jiving with the overall look of the prop. Especially the bar on top of the big screen.

Also, it seems that the long light bar+button look good compared to the placement of that Voight-Kampff plaque on top of it all.

One of our member here, Birdie, did an interpretation of the U.K. one.

I did the original design which I like best.

Some will prefer the one over the other...matter of taste of course

MarcusKirsch,

Like joberg I prefer the NTSC version. Everything I have drawn has been based on that version.

Yes, 8th, I get that. Because it ws the first essentially right.

Very fascinating stuff.

Wheer did you guys find those stories about the progress of the prop?

As I am based in the UK and will likely have to sit closer to what hardware is available here, I prefer the bigger screen version as it is just so present in the movie.

I am in the process of trying to find the right crt screens and I just ordered the LED bars, so I will be working my way back from this and obviously taking some steer from your amazing documentation so far.

Has anyone identified the 3 white buttons and where to siurce them from and do we have a final on the screen sizes? My assumption at the moment is that the 5" is the UK version (bigger size) for the main screen and I assume abot 2" for the two smaller screens.

Is anything known where the screens were taken from. Small colored screens were not that common back in '82.

MarcusKirsch...obsession has a way of finding infos Wink You just have to ask the people who were involved originally into making that prop.

3 options are possible when asking:

1: I don't remember, it was long ago...
2: I remember; here are the infos.
3: No response.

Either way, you've nothing to loose by asking Wink

Marcuskirsch,

There are several VK threads on this forum. It’s worth searching them all out and looking through them. There is a VK reference thread and Some stuff in the Tom Southwell Q&A thread. Other info comes from comments in books, magazines and the internet.

No one has ID’d the buttons yet. Shop bought LED graph bars seem to be smaller than those used on the actual prop. The 12 segment ones seem a lot shorter.

I think you are looking at a bigger screen than 5” to do the UK version.

It’s possible the screens on the NTSC version were monitors/viewfinders form professional video cameras of the early eighties.

Research, research, research.

Hi guys, thanks for the tips. Yes I have been travelling your entries for a while.

Started finding CRTs. I am currently at a stage, where the 5" main screen actually neatly fits the rest of my assumptions including bit LED bars.

Will keep you updated.

I am actually therefore at around 312mm width at the moment for the UK mahine.

I live in London, so it will be the UK machine plus its the one in the close-ups.
I am currently thinking the white suqre LEDS I will bespoke build with some diffusion plastic.

Ordered the shaver as well to get the center piece of the arm's head.

Will keep comparing and see where I percentally fall over.

I think I will try to compare actor sizes and the film screens as well.

I've now drawn up a new set of plans based on the Propstore plans, at the magic width of 430mm wide!

It was hard to get the photos of the elevations to match up in photoshop. So I had to do some creative guess work.

The images that follow are really a rough guide for me in how I might approach making the VK.

There will be more understructure to lock the upper housing to the base etc and an internal plate to bolt the mechanics too.

I have no monitors so really I have no idea if anything will fit. But its a start.

Hopefully the steps are self explanatory.

Looking very good Colin Cool The way you did it, it looks a lot like a regular kit you could put together easily.

I discover new info concerning the trench: there's 5 little fins at the bottom of said trench also.

These are actually separate from the main ones that are against the left hand side of the trench wall, when you're facing the rear of the prop.

They look like small triangles; the lowest point of said triangle going toward the point of the main fin. The highest point toward the right hand side of the trench. Maybe the highest point is 1/4 inch high and is rounded.

I hope it's clear...let me know and I'll draw something for you Wink

joberg an illustration would be good.

BTW did you find the Remington foil info?

If I can I will make parts for the VK repeatable. Looking at the original build you can see the layers of styrene making up the shapes and then blended together.

The upper housing and base I would like to vac form. Then adding the other parts onto that as illustrated . How I make the other parts I haven’t quite decided yet.
