No, I wasn't going to use the word 'Blaster'.
The words 'Firearm, Gun, Pistol, Weapon' etc. won't appear either.
They are there in the list simply to show what info will be included. |

We need to move forward.
So, decision time:
Deckard's name on the VIN plate, or not? |

"R. Deckard"?
"DECKARD R."?
I like the latter.
"DECKARD B-26354" ? Better still.... |

So, looking back through the thread, it would seem most would like, or are not opposed to Deckard's name being on there.
If it were, it would likely be a name/serial number combo, military style:
Deckard. R
B-260-354 |

This will re-ignite the old 260354 vs 26354 debate! |

I don't care,
As long as a majority decides what it is, that's what we'll have.

I'm actually OK with, or without the name. |

For my own part, I am strongly in opposition to the notion of putting any of the fan-created "information" that has been invented over the years — such as Pfläger this or PK that — anywhere on the box.
If it's not seen or heard in the movie basically, it mustn't go there, in my opinion.
The issue date, I can buy (it must have one, after all) but that's as far as my comfort zone will stretch...
Another strongly held opinion — my ears say that it must be, indeed can only be, 26354.
So:
Property of LAPD, logo, etc
Date
Deckard R.
B 26354
s/n
s/n in barcode
— definitely. _________________ 26354 |

We go with what the majority want, I'm afraid.
I have my own opinions about certain decisions, but it's a democratic process...
Lets get the draft graphic done, and take it from there. |

|
|
Fellow Runners -
There has been much back-and-forth on the contents of this "simple" addition to Skin-job's incredible offering.
Many here may know of my efforts in the past to investigate different areas of the graphics of this universe. And I have repeated those efforts here. I take the subject seriously, as I know you do. I would only hope that if there is further concerns, you will back your comments with some verifiable proof.
As to the date of issue, I used Ridley's November birthdate. It seemed fitting.
And who knows? Perhaps Tom Southwell or others in the know, might chime in again here, if they have time and any thoughts.
So - I offer this look at the design for the plaque, as it stands -
I have followed the sizing and content suggested by Karl, as he has taken in consideration the comments and suggestions voiced here. As he said from the start, without customizing each piece, you can never please everyone, but we have made every effort to rely on solid reference. I've contacted others to verify what I could. And there remain certain aspects that can't be absolutely confirmed (I'm assuming someone here is not hiding valuable input)
I can only hope you like the combination assembled here. I have tried to incorporate recognizable elements and typography as much as possible.
Of course we await your helpful comments. - Replicant 13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |

That looks fantastic, R13! Nice job!
Do we need to take a vote on B 260-354 or B 26354?

Posted: Sun Nov 05, 2017 8:10 pm Post subject: DECKARD's ID NUMBER |
|
|
Nexus -
I would recommend "No".
To my knowledge, there are no images showing Deckrd's ID in enough detail. However, in researching this over the years and again here, for this use, I referred to Tom Southwell's sketches and artwork when he designed the actual badge.
In his sketches (on the DVD and online) it can clearly be seen that the ID number (although different numerals in his rough sketch) begins with a letter, followed by a space, and then a hyphenated numerical series. Tom himself clarified here, in an earlier thread, that his "approved" art was turned over to the Props Department. They then "added" flourishes (like the transparent "X" or hole punches), but there is no indication that the base artwork was changed in any way.
Since his art shows a hyphenated number and (to my knowledge) the only actual ID reference ever seen (below) - that of another officer , exhibited alongside the hero blaster at Worldcon - shows another hyphenated number, I have to conclude that "B 260-354" is correct.
And when questioned in his car, Deckard responds with that number verbally. It might be interpreted either way, BUT his slight pause, " B, two sixty (pause), three fifty-four" is after the "sixty" not after the "three".
That delivery, in combination with Southwell's and the actual prop's hyphenated numbers leads me to the conclusion that the Southwell's art was followed.
Of course, I am open to any proof, but otherwise it falls to an educated guess vs. an opinion.
And this is my educated guess. - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |

|
|
As another confusing example, the corporation named here "SHIMATA-DOMINGUEZ" has several variations, depending on the source. According to one Summit member, it started in an earlier 1981 script with the names flipped, as "Dominguez-Shimata" and was picked up this way by the fan club for their certificate.
But apperently it has been spelled about as many ways as it has letters, from "Shimano" (like the bike company) to "Shimagu" and "Shimato" and Once-Bitten swears he heard is pronounced "Shimago" in one scene.
Just check out the earlier Summit thread:
http://propsummit.com/viewtopic.php?t=1129&highlight=shimato
After 35 years and all our efforts, it's just never easy figuring these things out!
