Can I ask that that any replies to Vader about the kind of oil Tomensouke uses be answered elsewhere.
I really don't want this thread to get derailed.
The foam is going to be an open cell black or dark grey polyurethane foam, like car wash sponge. It'll be faced with leatherette, which can be wiped clean if oil does get on it.
The cavity won't be sealed off. A pistol shape will be cut out and the blaster will lay in the recess.
Oil will probably get into the foam. But, if you're going to be oiling the blaster anyway, I don't see that it matters much.
It won't rot the foam. |

To clarify -- I am not in the least in any way at all even the slightest bit concerned with oil getting into the foam, as such.
I was just wondering if, since Tomenosuke relies on the oil to maintain the aesthetics of the piece, will I need to periodically replenish it, or will the cavity be designed to retain the oil for me.
Off the pistol rather than into the foam, was my concern.
And it seems I'll need to replenish it.
Question answered. Case closed.
And if you happen to know the answer to my off-topic question, please PM me. _________________ 26354 |

Small update:
The new wooden boxes arrived today, looking very nice. At least the couple I had time to unpack did.
I heard back from the press knife company. It seems they managed to slide my little job into their workflow a bit early, so we should have the cutting die back a bit earlier than expected.
I hope to have the sample box finished in the next few days, schedule permitting. |

OK. I THOUGHT we had settled all questions.
PROOF?
We could discuss this as well as other points in question for yet another 35 years. Here's MY take on this one point -
Like others, this will probably ALWAYS be debated, but the plaque is based on what input and "proof" I acquired and now.
I researched this some time ago in creating an ad posted elsewhere here, and subsequently used "Shimata-Dominguez". Recently in re-checking this, I found much the same info. The first and only "proof" available was on the original certificate first issued by the Blade Runner's 'Official Fan Club'.
AND, it was shown as a bank on the certificate . . . .
For the discussion here, I again refer you to this earlier Summit thread:
http://propsummit.com/viewtopic.php?t=1129&highlight=shimato
(And yes, I realize this online address has "shimatO" in the title)
I am told that the name was in turn based on information taken from an earlier version of the script - I have no reason to think the spelling might change, even though it was suggested that at some point "Shimata" was moved up front (perhaps because it sounded better) -
So . . . taken from a copy of a later (1981) script (as broadcast from the blimp):
". . . NINE PAID VACATIONS PER YEAR!
(WE NEED YOU you you)
(beat, beat)
The Dominguez-Shimata colony
wants supervisory recruits and
families. . . .
LINK: http://www.brmovie.com/Downloads/Docs/BR_Script_1981.txt
In researching this again, I asked Andy as well and his response was :
"I have always believed it was Shimata and the other spellings were misquotes . . ."
Others researched this and concluded other spellings. This one from expert model builder, Jason Eaton. Amazing work, but again a choice on his part -
- - - - -
All said, no one can fault Sarednab for using "Shimato". But that is just a choice. Broken record perhaps, but again "in my research" that spelling has nothing to back it up. And any labels previously fan-made (unless based on one proven to be used in the film?) remain equally in question.
So we "opted" to settle on "SHIMATA-DOMINGUEZ" .
Again, I am open to any proof available, but ther had to be a timeline, so a decision was made and we have allowed reasonable time for responses, with no verifiable result.
And given the circumstances, I think most here would agree we have tried to meet most of the concerns voiced here. I would rather use a name that has some validity than try to match a name that on another replica that might, or might not be correct.
I hope you agree. - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . .

Just remember, that Shamata Dominguez was the name of the Offworld colony and not any Earth bound corporations. Maybe instead of worrying about it, just leave it off. It looks like you got a ton on there already. You don't want it to look like the ID cards you used to find at Sci-Fi conventions in the 80s. Channel Tom Southwell as much as possible too.

it's ok R13, thanks for your time. I wasn't asking for proofs and wasn't going to give any, was just saying that it was not going to match another replica that is often in possession of the fans. But I know I was too late. |

ARG!!!!
Committee decisions . . . Anybody here ever hear the saying "Too many cooks spoil the broth"?
No one can agree or offer any proof, just opinions. I tried to incorporate elements to make this as authentic as I thought possible. And get it done on time.

OK, that's enough.
Dave has done a final amended version. In an effort, I'm certain, to make everyone happy.
As if that were possible...
I'm sure he'll post it here in a short while.
That's it. No more.
The design is now locked.

NO MORE SHIMATA/SHIMATO/SHIMUGU . . .
Here's the final FINAL version. Hope you're happy with the change! - R13
- R13
For the record, I replaced the "© Shimata-Dominguez" (bottom left) with the characters from the "POLICE 99S" design (As Southwell stated, he used the Kanji characters not knowing what some even said, so I repeat that practice here).
I also replaced the Shimata type with a Distribution License number (DLIC) beneath the STEYR ARMS type. _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . .

Sorry if I caused more stress R13, I was actually hoping to end the stress, but I also could have just said that the plaque is your piece, and do whatever you want with it, because in the end that should be the truth. The quality of your work is always top notch and inspired. Any of us here should count themselves lucky to own any piece of it. Of course now I have to put myself down for one of these pieces. If you decide to sell the plaques separately let me know. The boxes are great too, the best I have ever seen, but I just won’t have the funds for it till next year at the earliest. I am also working on my own box.

In case you don't know, the Kanji characters mean Police (police officer) in both Japanese and Chinese. Of course that is what Kanji means, "Han characters", or borrowed Chinese characters. In China they are called Hanzi. Whenever I wear my BR shirt out with the Kanji, I will have people who read Chinese tell me what it means and crack a joke about me being a police officer. LOL

Thanks Andy. No worries.
Sounds like the Kanji/Hanzi characters work as this is a police piece - box and/or contents.
If we proceed with separate plates, it will be posted here as an 'interest thread' first.
Chances are it may be slightly larger that the current version, possibly different in some way, but it will not be offered up for discussion next time.
