I've just finished reading through this very engaging thread. Beautiful work by Skin-Job on the box and Replicant 13 on the plaque.

Very interesting discussion of the plaque, too, which led to lively debates about Deckard's shield number and Shimata vs. Shimato vs. Shimano vs. Shimagu.

The kanji in the signature of the VP on the Dominguez-Shimata certificate posted on p. 9 by Replicant 13 would be read "Shimata," consistent with the bank name on the certificate. After all that arbitrary chopping up of Japanese text in various onscreen props, they went to the trouble of getting the right kanji here!

Also, as andy pointed out, the kanji that Replicant 13 ultimately substituted for the Shimata-Dominguez copyright means "police." For those who are curious (or would like to be able to tell envious onlookers everything about their leather-bound case), the word is keisatsu (pronounced "K-satsu," with the slightest emphasis on the "K," and the "satsu" sounding close to "sots").

On a side note:

Not that it makes any difference to the work, but isn't it a bit odd to refer to the plaque as a "VIN"? A VIN, after all, is a Vehicle Identification Number. Perhaps more appropriate would be "FIN" (for "firearm") or the more symbolically-fraught "SIN" (for "sidearm").

Whatever you want to call the plaque, it came out wonderfully, and is a fitting companion to the striking box. Again, gorgeous work, guys!

Congratulations to the lucky ten!

If you fancy being lucky number 11, there's a thread open for interest in the MK2 box

Smile

As far as 'VIN PLate' goes, it's just a shorthand name for the plaque.

We know that the V refers to vehicle. It does look like a VIN plate, and serves the same purpose is all.

Dave and I don't take ourselves that seriously.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Work continues on the lacquering of the cases.

Final coats tomorrow or Monday.

Then the leather, corners, hardware, etc.

Nice to see that you've got an interest list up for the MK2. Very Happy

I'm afraid I personally wouldn't have a use for this lovely piece, as all of my BR blasters are on display stands... but that doesn't stop me from admiring it, and your amazing craftsmanship.

TEMPONAUT!

I thought we had lost you! Been too long. I still think of you whenever I toy around with any Kanji characters. Thanks again for your help all those years ago on the FASH cover.

And thanks for the clarifications here. We appreciate it.

Yea, I argued for "Shimata" (it was used in too many other places as well as that early DS Colony Bank certificate), but like other points it became too much of a debate. There will always be those who won't accept educated guesses, no matter how much research and reasoning is behind it.

As to "VIN" - I opted for a DLIC (Distributors License) number, under the STEYR ARMS instead, replacing the Shimata reference. Wish that tie-in could have remained, but ya win some, ya lose some.

REPLICANT 13!

Thanks for the shout-out and the warm welcome.

Yes, it's been way too long. It's nice to know that you still think of me when you toy around with kanji characters. It was fun to assist you on that project.

I like the DLIC number. That was a good solution to the Shimata conflict -- a smart compromise that everyone should be able to live with.

Ahh, it's good to "see" you again! Very Happy

Yes, really good to see you again Temponaut Smile

Small project update.
The final coat of Melamine lacquer will go on to the cases tomorrow, and then there will be a few days of curing and airing.

Stain colours look great!

I'll be getting on with the leather work meanwhile.

Update.

All the cases are now sanded, stained and lacquered. They are curing at the moment. The stain colours look really good.

Reworking the leather pattern for the top panel.
I've had some conflict between the two closure snaps, them being side by side. Sometimes it's hard to get the second snap to 'snap', if the the first one is already fastened.

I'm going to rework the pattern for a single retainer snap instead. The retainer strap that it sits on will likely be a rounded or spear point end now. The squared end looks weird with one snap.

Sorting through all the corner pieces and matching them in sets. The corner screws have now arrived.

All the cases should be done by the end of this week/start of next week.

Makes total sense, and will look at least as good!

Or you could try magnets ... magnets are cool.
They're all the rage nowadays, or so I'm told...

Tried magnets. Not good.
A snap is fine. I'll either point or round end the retainer strap.

I just got a call and have to fly out for a meeting in Bulgaria this weekend. I'll be back in a few days (assuming I don't get snowed in) and then I'll jump right back on these.

I hope to start getting the leather cut before I have to leave.

The trip will only delay things for a few days.

Thank you.
This one certainly seems to be. Wiped me out.

Fear not, I have all the components, Vin plates, hardware, leather and badges ready to go.

If I shake this by the start of next week, we should be good to start shipping the first boxes by the end of the week, as they're finished.

So, for those on the list we'll need to be thinking of organising payment then.

Small update.
I think the Flu is on its way out.

Things should be back up and running in the next day or two.
Be ready for payment and shipping.

So the newly designed leather top panels are now cut, the edges stained and burnished, and the stitching detail continues today.

getting close now.
