Quick update,
My life has ceased to be my own for the next couple of weeks.
I'm home for literally two days and then back overseas.
This trip will be two weeks-ish.

I apologize for the interruption to the flow of the project, but this is the culmination of about ten years work, and the timing sucks.

I have all the cmponents except the foam liners, and the copper plated corner pieces.
The latter are still with the plater.
I hope everything will be in hand when I get back to start the first six on the list.

Many thanks for your patience.

Hi Everyone,
Just got back last night from filming in Bulgaria.

So, I have all the components in now, the copper plated steel corners fnally came back from the plater, they look great.

I'm starting sanding and staining the first six boxes in the run.

I'm happy to be finally getting going on these. Plan is to finish the first six, then start the second six when they ship.
Thank you guys so much for your patience with this.

I have been working for the past year with a Bulgarian studio to develop a feature film of mine, and they asked me to write and direct a proof of concept film. That's where I was.

Back now and firing on all cylinders on this project.

Congratulations. Seems like a dream come true. Getting an opportunity to make your own film is definitely a good reason to delay this project a little.

Thanks.

This was the 'proof of concept' for the proposed feature film.
I'd been working on it with the studio for a long time, and they wanted me to shoot the POC to give them an idea of what the feature would be like.

Back on track now....

Hi Everyone,
So, work sanding, staining and lacquering the first six boxes started this morning.
There won't 'progress' stuff as such but I'll post some shots when the six are done.
We'll get them shipped, then finish the second six.

The weather is better than on the last run, so they'll cure faster.

More as it happens,

Update,
The first six cases are sanded and stained. The colours are even better than the last run, I think.
They need to dry and cure for a day or two. The plan is to lacquer them Wednesday.

Thanks very much, I appreciate that.
I'm sorry real life got in the way a little, but we're on track now.
The first six are sanded, stained and lacquered now, just waiting a day or two for the lacquer to cure and harden.

I have the copper plated steel corner protectors in hand. I'l degrease them and patinate with antiquing fluid to add a brown patina, then rub back just a little to show some copper. These will then be sealed with Rennaisance wax to 'set' them.

Onward.

Update,

The lacquer is cured hard enough now.
I plan to finish the first of the boxes today/tomorrow and post pics for you.

I need to do a little pattern work for the leather piece for the top.

Stay tuned.

Here's another!

I decided to go with a warm brown/reddish leatherette on this run.
The colours compliment the warm stained wood brushed bronze plaques and browned copper very well.

Here's a pic. Please excuse the crappy old Coyle. I use it for fitting holsters.

OK here's the sample box done.

http://www.karlderrick.com/hosted15/index.html

I haven't done the interior leatherette/padding, as it still needs to be die cut.

The plaque on the side of the box is just placed on for the picture, the plaques will not be stuck onto the delivered boxes at all.

The corners are steel, copper plated then brown chemical patinated. If you'd like more wear on your box corners, a green dish scrubber pad can be rubbed on the corners and it'll wear gently through the patination revealing the copper underneath.

I asked the platers not to take care when plating the corners so they'd have imperfections in the plating, and subsequent patination. The flaws are deliberate, to add character and story.

A new addition is the corner lid support strut. No more chains Smile
Also, the brass lid side clips are new.

Personally, I'm really happy with the look of this case. I think it has a really authentic old military/campaign vibe to it. I much prefer the bronze/brown/brass look with the rich stained wood.

The first six boxes should be done this week. Can the first six on the list please get ready to send funds? I'll post with details as soon as the first six are done. Here's the list again.

Thanks very much.

I like the way the colours work together.
Last time we were tied to the chrome badges, so had little choice in hardware, etc. This time, with the brushed bronze, it allowed far more leeway.

Going to go and die cut the interior padding today.

The first six are on track to be done this week.

I have to go back to the studio in Bulgaria next week, but will get the final six finished as soon as I get back the following week.

Many thanks again for your collective patience.

Just a quick word on the details of these pieces.
The box as presented in the pics of the previous post will be what each of you is receiving.
It's not a 'prototype' as such, so there won't be amendments.

I've already got a couple of requests from individuals asking if their box could be different, if details can be tweaked and changed.

I'm sorry to say they can't.

I can't get into a situation where I'm making 12 different boxes. I simply don't have the time available.

Please don't be offended.

Those in the first six please contact Deb to make the arrangements:

Chris (TeeCrooz), number 7 on the list, has bailed out on us.

This leaves the number 7 spot open if anyone else would like it.
