Beautiful! Your sculpts certainly stand apart from the film in their own right. Excellent work, and makes me wish all the more that I could work to such a level of detail. Shocked

Thank you all for your kind words. I really appreciate your comments.

Regarding the painting tips, for the Heavy Ivory technique, I simply painted the cast resin pieces, which come out of the mold off-white in color, with a brown acrylic wash then wiped away the excess.

I finally finished the prototype set. One is faux "Heavily Antiqued Ivory" and the other is a faux "Jade". It was a very time consuming process. I need to streamline the process a bit and experiment with a few different finishes. I will continue to update you with my progress. In the meantime, I plan to get started on my lighted table. I hope you like them.

Stunning!

Are the finishes painted on, or is part of it incorporated into the resin?

I cast the Ivory pieces in a bonded marble that cures off-white. I then gave them a brown acrylic wash and a yellow acrylic dry-brush. The Jade ones were a bit more difficult, however. They are black bonded marble castings with several layers of acrylic of different hues. I am currently trying to simplify the process for that side. I intend to come up with a formula for a "jade bonded marble". That way I can simplify the process like the Ivory side.

Thanks for the info. From what you've said, I'm guessing that the "bonded marble" is resin mixed with powdered marble? Wouldn't it be tintable with regualr resin dye, or is the color determined by the marble? (if it's actually got marble in it)

Your are correct. I just need to get the correct mix of yellow and green dyes. The marble powder tends to flatten the color a bit. It's a matter of getting the right balance.

Amazing work Rick!

FYI, this site appears to have the same molds as the Artcraft site that was listed previously, but the blow-up image actually works. They run about the same, and no, they are not duplicates of the Banbury set as listed on the Hoyles site...

http://www.fredaldous.co.uk/product_151150165.htm

So I suppose if you wanted something "close" these might suffice...if you wanted to go through the trouble of casting them yourself... and buying from the UK...

Hi again,

I just wanted to post an update. I am making slow but steady progress on this project. Although I have finished the lighting portion of the table, I'm still designing and building the lower structure. Once I have completed it, I will post images that show the table in the "light of day". In the meantime, these "work prints" will give you an idea of how it's all coming together.

Rick

The position of the pieces shown is the "Immortal Game" after Black's ninth move in the 1851 game.

Rick, you know I love your concept blasters, and will be in the Fan Book as well you agree with. BUT, this chess set MUST BE TOO!!!! I'd don't remember it at all! Smile

Wow. Pieces over light table are gorgeous! Please, take all the pictures you think are worth of it. Also, explaining all the process from set identification, who to get moulds (molds?), and so on will be very interesting as a prop making of, do you think?
