I just noticed something from this pic here...

the basic faceplate is black vinyl(or a negative lcars like transparency or silk screen) on the plastic with the colors in the back behind the "open" sections. The white lines on the red outline in the numbers I believe is a result of a shift in the back color gels, where the white behind the numbers shifted up.

Yes, it looks like gels were used to illuminate this piece. I think they may have used film negatives just like STNG did in their first few seasons, with the gells plastered to the back of the panel for color.

You have to look at the basic technology of the time and what might have been available. Not at all practical today, but as early as 10 years ago, still common practice I am sure.

Also note that the Hero Vid-Phno had 3-d button that could actually be pressed unlike the model documented in the report.

Just food for thought in which version you are interested in making.

I know this thread is pretty old by now, but just wondering if anyone has continued researching making one of these.
It sure would be a cool piece to display!

I had to put this project aside and forgot about it all together. Now that I am building my studio I need to get back to work on this as soon as I can. I am a slacker, but I spent most of my day off today bringing in some stuff over to my studio and organizing it. Most importantly my CD player. Now that the weather seems to be getting better, I may be able to start bringing in the bigger stuff soon.

A whole lotta slow over here as well. I finished the stickers, but I have not been able to get to anything else lately.

Well, that's good to hear the project hasn't been forgotten entirely!
Hopefully a nice replica will come down the pike at some point.

I wish I had some manufacturing skills to offer, but I'm more of a "get a kit--glue it together--paint it" kind of guy.

You mean you don't even bother sanding!!!! You are a brave man Laughing

I agree that it is good to see this is still alive even if it is on the back burner.

Nah, if the resin has any seams or "boogers" I just chew them off with my nasty, sharp, pointy teeth!! Nom. . . nom. . . nom!

I started both this, and the parking meter in Tampa for the fan film, and had to scrap both of them when I moved to Atlanta.

I had bought thin black lexan for the rounded parts, and bolted them into a hand bent metal (aluminim slats from home depot) frame. I never had the face plate printed, but have one of Ben's awesome digital recreations.

I wasn't going for accurate as much as "doable" and something that we could bounce around on a set too. I figured if it got broken that would only add to it's charm.

Smile

I had enough materials for 2 or 3 of them. I still have the materials, but don't have the room for a prop like this currently, but in time I do want to build 1 of these, and a parking meter.

I'll also try my hand at a trafficator at some point too.

Hi there, NYzeki. Smile

There's a 35mm press transparency of the VidPhon up on eBay at the moment:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-Blade-Runner-Negative-Transparency-Slide-Photo-10_W0QQitemZ270218250392QQ

Providing it's in focus, it'd be a good reference image.

I saw that slide, The price was a little high, and it looks like it may have been taken from the film instead of a seperate press shot.

NYzeki, I can not tell you how exited I am to have you a part of this board. Thank you for joining and sharing with us your info.
This project definately needs to get back up and running. Now that my art studio is coming together I think this will happen in one way or another, hopefully soon.
