Dave, could you explain what a "true" snub nose revolver is, as opposed to those which just have shorter barrels? I am not trying to belittle your efforts, but to me the weapon truly looks awkward, especially in comparison to the PDK snub. Only my 2ยข ... |

Bwood,
No worries, I didn't take your comments as belittling my design. It's great to have open discussions and get feedback and opinions. The endless "Great job!" posts can get old after awhile. Okay, not really!
Snub nose revolvers come in all shapes and sizes. Generally snubbies have a barrel length around 2 inches, standard revolvers around 4 inches and long barrels around 6 to 8. A snub nose can be just a revolver with a full size frame, and a short barrel, or built around a smaller frame. Most of the time full size revolvers hold six rounds and snub nose hold 5, though the hero prop was built around a full size Charter Arms Bulldog that had a 5 round cylinder.
Rick Ross's brilliant PKD snub nose is based on his earlier full size PKD, he shortened the barrel and receiver and made smaller three fingered grips. He also designed a completely new assembly to replace the Steyr clip housing. Rick's snubby is more analagous to a more compact version of a full size, .44 caliber blaster. Overall, it's a good bit larger than mine.
My goal was to design a very compact frame snub nose that would be comfortable to carry in an ankle holster as a back up weapon, or concealed under a jacket. So I went with the overall smaller .38 caliber frame and a two-fingered grip.
As to it being "awkward", yes, the overall profile is not as well proportioned as the full sized weapon. But that is usually the case with snub nosed revolvers. To some extent this was intentional in my design. The double triggers and larger guard compound this. I wanted to be careful that I didn't just end up with something that looked like an overall scaled down version of the blaster.
Keep those casrds and letters coming! _________________ Dave

Snub noses. The strange and the wonderful.
DaveG's snub nose is pretty cool in comparison.
I like the chrome and green LEDS on the "Noisy Cricket".

Excellent pics crattercritter...we could even go further in the past to see that "snubbies" are a very old design. Always made to be concealed (sleeve, pocket, socks, etc), generaly "looking" like his big brother with a few less details. Weapon manufacturers were ready to change the tooling to come up with a different weapon altogether (unlike car manufacturer a two-door is exactly like the foor-door model...no changes in tooling and design) |

Exactly? There are many differences between the front and rear fascia, (which remain essentially the same.) For example, in two door models, usually the doors are longer front to back, and in a two door model, the windows are usually frameless. |

Well it's certainly not as radical as to create an all together different car...
Sure, there's a few details here and there that were altered to make it "different" but it's basically the same car.
As for snubbies, some are a completely new design (and even some have different screws details or another metal was used , specially in terms of weapons created for the Navy for example). My Father has an extensive weapon collection from the Napoleon III era and it was a tradition at the "Manufacture d' armes de Saint-Etienne" to create a rifle for the Army, then the same one but with a shorter barrel for the Cavalry and then a completely different one for the Navy |

Sorry... but great minds think alike... and mine just happened to tag along. I need a weapon of choice for the antagonist... a familar bald clone of numeric name. _________________ I've had people walk out on me before, but never when i was being so charming |

The new blaster project will be a .50 caliber magnum based on Smith & Wesson's massive X-Frame .50 cal revolver. A military issued weapon for Offworld use only.

Wow, you must be psychic! I literally just got back into the shop this morning and started in working on the Snubbie. No updates yet, stay tuned! _________________ Dave

Okay, finally getting back to work on the Snubby! Beleive me, I'm as anxious to see it done as you guys are!
Fabricated the receiver end cap and pin today.
Rather than hassle trying to turn the end cap as one piece, I broke it down into 4 separate parts, turned on the machine lathe out of acrylic, that would slide together to form the finished shape.
Here are the four parts assembled and glued together with solvent cement.
Then the cap was trimmed to length on the lathe.
And finally the notch for the barrel was cut out using the CNc router. The center pin was turned our of brass.

Im digging that transparent look for some reason. It would be a cool to see a see thru shell and metal or solid working innards.
Still I also love seeing the building process. Very cool. |
