Amazing work. You interpreted the pose perfectly. You can read why I did the things I did, but now feel free to create this in your own way. And correct the Japanese to be correct and fit your theme.

And on the magazine Kill Weekly you did a wonderful dog head. My dog was based on a photo out of People Magazine I think and very rough. Yours looks very professional.

Again, thanks, Tom. I have had the luxury of technology and time, neither of which was afforded you in the early 1980s.

Regarding KILL, now I HAVE to ask -

On the first page of this thread I posed a question regarding the origins of your KILL cover. I stumbled upon a poster from the 1972 movie, "The Doberman Gang" which featured several dobermans with amazingly similar spiked collars (repeated below). Smile

Knowing how graphic artists, under deadline pressures and before Google, often relied on whatever resources they found handy, I had to wonder if photos from that same movie were your reference for the sketch . . .

From what you are saying, it sounds like a possibility(?)

No. It was a photo from People magazine, I think, but your reference and finish art far surpasses what I did.

Nice work.

Because of all the discussion (on the site) of the fonts etc. for the
magazine covers ( way back, years ago) and now, late to the party,
I can add my 2 cents. So here goes: (better late than never ????)

These are my ACTUAL Letraset sheets!!!!!!!!!!
And also the rubbed on titles I made with them.
(FASH was hand lettered with a litho crayon.)
Most of these were about the size of a postage stamp,
then photo enlarged.
The one with all the busy logos, etc.
was a sheet of custom press on logos that I grouped from
many sources (this is the film neg used for that). I was
asked to rub these right on to the actual sets to give them
extra detail. Ive only noticed one in the film. When Deck is
washing the blood from his mouth in his bath room. The logo
"NIKOSEY" (which is on the sheet on the left) is behind Deck
on the wall (very tiny). I did this design for my friend
Tom Nikosey who is a mate from art school and who got
famous for doing several of the SUPERBOWL logos. Also
on this sheet was a school assignment logo "oe" for
Otis Escalator. Like I said in the DVD I was grasping for straws.

I thought perhaps the People photo was from that same movie.

Thanks for the uploads. Interesting. I'd started my first agency job when Blade Runner hit the theaters, so I was knee-deep in Formatt®, Letraset® and all the other dry transfer type.

It was a love/hate relationship - as you stated, never enough of the letters I needed, or the sheets got brittle and wouldn't transfer. Like Joberg, I still have a few sheets packed away in my studio closet.

Can't say why I kept mine, but I'm certainly glad you kept yours . . .

I recognize the grid pattern with the arrows in the middle left part of the jumble sheet on the Street pay Vid Phon. See where Deckard phones Rachael at the snake pit for a decent close up.

Rub and burnish. Rub and burnish. I never thought those would be "The Good Ol' Days". I guess every generation's gonna have some . . .

I recognize many of the symbols on your "jumble" neg. No doubt I had some of the same source pages back then.

Again, cool stuff, Tom! TFS! - R13

I have to add - seeing the actual hand-lettered "FASH" (simple as it may be), after all this time, is incredible!

THANKS! - R13

Thanks Replicant13.
That FASH title was tiny and fast. I was working on a
harder one when Ridley said he liked this little one.
go figure,

I figured as much. Like your Bikinied Babe, it's the things you spend the time on that seldom make the cut, for whatever reason. Confused

Still, it's cool to see the originals! - R13

I just noticed the designer's name atop Tom's Letragraphica sheet for the COMPANY font - Martin Wait.

COMPANY's the font used on the Sector 4 signs and the Mail sign among others. I bought the digital version directly from Martin a couple of years ago. For those interested, you can now find it on MyFonts -

Rep13,
We also made street signs with this font.
All German sounding names.
This was our official city font.
Good eye.

As you know, with Tom Southwell's generous contributions here over the past weeks, many of our questions have now been answered . . .

Tonight, with his revelation in the his Q&A section, he has answered the question that initially brought me to The Summit - the origins of the DORGON cover art -

AGAIN, THANK YOU, TOM!

The DORGON and FASH covers were the most elusive. Tom has now addressed both.

It's great to finally know the details.

. . . Now, about that DROID image. Confused

Replicant 13 ,
You are welcome.
I could see that this was a nagging question you had, which seemed to
get worse the harder you looked for an answer.

Unlike most books, these clip art books would loose value as pages
got clipped out and used up. At some point they would hit the trash.
It says something about me that I still HAD these fragments
after sooooo long.

Whatever it says, it says it for most of us. As an illustrator, I've tried to avoid clip at all costs - as a rule (or a matter of pride) - but deadlines are deadlines and we've all succumbed to using it. For whatever reason. Now, with Google and other online sources so dominant, clip art or stock photos seem the norm.

And I still have most of the old annual sourcebooks and much of my early transfer type. Just couldn't throw them away, brittle and dated and useless as they've become.

I think we're all just thankful you DID save it all Tom, and are so willing to share it, here and now.

While I wouldn't quite qualify it as a "nagging" quest, I was frustrated by such a response from Dover, knowing that they were the original source. The search is half the fun in all of this, but you might think that they would know their catalog better Confused

Thanks. It was worth the wait. - R13

Of course, with Tom Southwell's revelation of its source, I went shopping and immediately found several copies of Edmund Gillon's "Picture Sourcebook" available online.

My copy arrived today. At day's end I leafed through the pages. As Tom promised, it was all there. Fatboy, the cow - even the floral arrangement and the great (not yet blue) screw are contained in Gillon's collection of vintage art, along with ample fodder for future DORGON covers.

What I didn't expect was the mysterious handless glove for Tom's other cover, CREATIVE EVOLUTION -

There it was, with its missing mate. After such a lengthy search, it was an unexpected bonus.
