I got the distinct impression that, like so many other BR Fans out there,
he simply got on with other projects and didn't follow up on it.

Now that he has one in his collection however,
he seems interested in finding out how we were able to get it done.

The labels are awesome!! They are also unforgiving... once they get a bit of a bite on the glass, they don't let go... I think the placement on the main label on my bottle is at an ever-so-slightly steeper angle than a lot of the pics I've seen of others, but I still think it looks great!

Thanks for the review, SCOFFMAN. I agree: Paul did an awesome job, not only with the Bottle, but also with the packaging.

As for the angle and holding power of the labels:

When I first affixed the main JWB label, I had the opposite concern: I felt I hadn't attached my label at sharp enough an angle. When I gently pulled at the edge of the label, I realized that it was NOT going to come up. However, I thought it looked pretty good and, when I compared it to photos of other Bottles on the board, I saw that the angle of my label matched that of most of the others.

Later, I bought an authentic bottle of Johnnie Walker Black so that I could transfer the Scotch into my OB Bottle. (I know that nobody but I would know, but Paul's work on the Bottle was so meticulous, I just had to use JWB. ) As soon as the liquor store delivered the JWB, I realized -- D'OH! -- I should have waited until I had the authentic bottle in hand to use as a guide for the angle of the label. When I opened the JWB box and took out the bottle, I noticed (1) that the angle of the label on the bottle was identical to that of the label on the box, and (2) that the bottle itself had a ridge formed directly into the glass indicating the angle at which the label should be placed. My conclusion was that John Walker & Sons are very consistent in the angle of their JWB labels.

But now the puchline: when I went to transfer the booze from the donor bottle to the OB Bottle, I saw that the two flaps of the main label sticker had popped up from the sides. Cautiously, I pulled a little at one of the flaps and the entire label pulled smoothly and cleanly off of the Bottle. Perhaps for the first time ever, I felt grateful for the heat and humidity of Japan in August!

The original placement of my label was, indeed, somewhat too shallow when compared with an actual bottle of JWB. I was able to reposition the label, though, and now I think the angle is a good match. The angle of the actual label is a bit steeper than I first thought, and I think yours is in fact pretty much on the money.

For anyone who wants to try to reposition your labels: I'm not sure that I'd risk exposing your Bottle to a harsh environment (such as putting it in a steamy bathroom), but I'm pretty sure the humidity here is what allowed me to remove and reposition my label. Again, when I first attached it to the Bottle, I thought there was no way it would come up again without tearing; when I checked the Bottle a couple of days later, the label came up very easily.

Here's my Bottle (#12/60) together with the donor bottle; you can compare the angle of the labels on the authentic bottle, the authentic box, and the beautiful OB Bottle:

A few more shots of #12. (The Bottle appears to be leaning in the second and third shot, but this because of the angle at which I was holding the camera. The Bottle itself stands proudly upright.)

Many thanks again, Paul and everyone who realized this quest for one of the BR Grails!

Thank you, too, Pilot. Wink

For those concerned about getting the angle of the label right, I'd suggest making a template of the angle to help transfer it to the new bottle.

Line up a piece of heavy paper or card stock with the label on your donor bottle of JWB. Trace the label angle and cut along it to create your template. Then, you can use a grease pencil to copy the angle onto the new bottle. After that, you just line up the label with your mark, wipe off the grease pencil and VOILA!

Now, all I have to do is wait for mine to arrive and all will be well.

The last two are going to Terje Mork of Finland

Hey, OB! Are you sure Terje Mork lives in Finland? That's very norweigian name. Thought that I'm the only one from Finland who did order the bottle...

Very interesting shots. And the angle label question, well, "learn from others... or learn of your own errors..." Smile I take note! First, buy a 12 yo Black Label one. Then, take a template over it. Finally, do the right thing!

Thank you!!

We did talk briefly about having that lifted glass label guide-line added to our bottle but decided
against it as it doesn't seem to appear in the movie.

I have also noticed that in hot enough weather the labels will peel up
a bit and this can help with adjusting placement if need be.

The labels seem very tough to me, as in strong and sturdy...I know
that when I removed original labels from my bottles from the 50's, they tended
to wrinkle quite a bit, not so with these new ones.
Ofcourse I haven't tried peeling them up from a completely stuck down position, only from a slightly lifted one.

Maybe someone with a bottle of Black Label can make a template?

Since I don't drink it'd be a waste of money (and a perfectly good bottle of BL) if I were to get one just for label placement reference...

The stuff keeps for ever...what better place to keep it than in your BR Whiskey Bottle?
Plus, if you never drink, it will alway's look cool.

The last of the US shipping labels have been printed!
I plan on packaging them tonight and sending them out tomorrow.
I'll post the list right after that.

You said a mouthful there man!
Sometimes it seems like it's been forever, then I stop and remember
that we are still under one year from start to finish, then I stop and remember
that I have wanted one of these bottles since the movie came out in 82!
My GAWD!
I feel guilty for not getting going on this thing a lot sooner than I did but everyone is
doing such a great job fitting out there bottle that I also feel a great deal of relief and happiness...
long strange trip you say?
I feel ready for the rest home pal...

Ummm . . . I really hope that it doesn't, Paul, since I haven't seen my name on any of the lists, yet.

Be nice if Paul had a reliable manufacturer for them, or someone closer who was affordable. And a staff of people to handle the orders too.

not gonna happen.

Not gonna happen.

NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

At least not from me anyway.
I don't need to tell some of you how burned out I am on all this but it's probably
a result of trying to do too much myself(wrapping, packaging, shipping, etc...)
It's pretty much killed my interest in the possibility of another run...
not to mention the fact that if I turned around and DID another run it would likely
do little other than to lower the value of the existing bottles!

The one thing I would do differently if I had it to do all over again?
I would sell the bottle exclusively in the US...no International shipping.

I still have some bottles with a very small crack available...PM me for interest.

Understood. When your passion becomes a production line, I can see why the burnout would start to kick in. I would still be interested in a cracked one as long as it wasn't too noticeable.
