Hello folks.

Bear in mind there are a number of other boards competing for user time

Might I suggest a few things:

- merge with another board...I dunno how, but combine resources and dual moderation

- monthly contest with a nice price
(contests are always good ways to draw crowds)

- board gatherings, ie, spur on local parties

- collect and post gobs and gobs of photos--make it a repository of reference photos.

- user friendly/ user perks

-allow user video files if possible

- user blogs (threads specifically controlled by a single user talking about their latest project, ideas etc etc ...and my favorite.....an RPF discussion thread. Allow reasonably unmoderated discussions about the fatherland---whats still good about it, and where its gone south.

Drew -

While this isn't really the venue to address your suggestions, I'll see what I can do before moving it.

1) With almost 85 members, the problem is more about getting those members that are already here to participate more, than about getting more members;

2) A monthly contest would be nice, but who would supply the prizes? Both Tom and I are relatively new parents, so funds generally fluctuate between tight and non-existent;

3) As at the RPF, we'd be more than happy to post and stick announcements of local prop parties and gatherings that are brought to our attention;

4) If folks want to start posting up reference photos and videos, more power to them;

5) I have no idea what you mean by "user friendly/ user perks";

6) See answer # 4 above;

7) If one of the members wants to post up an "In Progress" thread about their latest project, we're all for it. Bring it on. We'd all love to see it.

As far as "an RPF discussion thread. Allow reasonably unmoderated discussions about the fatherland---whats still good about it, and where its gone south", go for it. Tom and I are both pretty laissez-faire about the moderation here. Talk about whatever you want and see how it grows. I think the only thing we'd crack down on are postings of porn or someone dropping F-bombs every other word. Beyond that, have a good time.

Moved your other reply here, too, but I had to quote it since I can't edit it into an existing thread.

Quote:
Hi Pete,

How are ya.

As for who might be offering up a price....Ill consider offering a nice bounty. How about this...for members over hmm say 200 posts of reasonable merit -no junk posts-, we can run a raffle or something like that...I will offer up something I can make or the like.

I also think that recruitment is critical...30 quality posts might be brain fodder, but 3000 sheeples are fun to ' oooh and awww ' and in that quanity does in fact come good old fashioned ingenuity.....dont underestimate newbies. So Id say recruit like crazy, swell the ranks and frankly kick up some dirt.

One of the issues I find troubling is that people have a disdain for the squabbling but do not appreciate why there is squabbling....in other words its not merely 'childish' behavior.....some of it is genuine jockeying for the scraps in a highly 'nichified' market. Appreciating these raisons de etre and then encouraging those jockeys to post might then make this place sizzle. You dont want defcon 4, but you dont want tumbleweeds either.
Know what I mean.

Maybe its worth copying what Fox does.....brand the mud slinging:

PS: "The most trusted name in Props."

I dunno man Im tossing ideas out there....kick em around, see if they crack and spill out gold.

D

I agree that recruitment is necessary. That's why Tom and I (along with a few of the other members) use a banner and link to Prop Summit as our sigs on the other boards.

And, as you can tell by some of the names in the membership roster, we're not averse to having frank (or even heated) talk. As I said before, bring it on.

As far as a raffle goes, that's a fine idea. A few months back, Tom auctioned off a piece (I can't remember what it was) that was won by Shawn Morgan. If you want to donate a piece, e-mail Tom (it's really his party, I'm just the cleaning crew). I'm sure that something can be worked out.[/quote]

LOL!

Drew, first, welcome to Propsummit

Second, Pete and I have been kicking some things around, and if you are willing to donate to help increase traffic, I am all for it.

Third, this is starting to look like a list so I will stop numbering my sentences.

Anyway, we are open to lots of ideas and suggestions. Unfortunately, you are correct in saying that there are many boards out there that serve this purpose. Pete and I like to think that this forum is differnt because we offer freedom to post and think how you like. I dont care who you are, unless you are a viagra spammer you can post till your heart's content.

Otherwise, thank you for the suggestions, and I hope that in the end people will end up coming here to discuss freely all aspect of the hobby and anything else they might have to say.

When you enter the home screen at www.propsummit.com or www.bladerunnerprops.com look to the top right and you will see:

Code:
View posts since last visit
View your posts
View unanswered posts

It is under the Log IN/Out button.

Hope that helps!

Maybe it's been asked before but I didn't see it so here goes...

Would it be possible for you guy's to add a SPELLING CHECKER to the PM feature? I would find it extremely helpful and I'm sure others would as well.
Thanks for your time!

That would be good Very Happy I miss my old google toolbar spelling checker.

Paul if you haven't tried it yet the free google toolbar has a spelling checker that is more alike to MS Word than the usuall email checker and allows to overview the whole page of spelling instead of going through them one at a time.

I will see how difficult it would be to add one in.

Take care,

Would it be OK to post a Paypal button for members wanting to donate towards the operating costs for the board?

How about for the top logo adding the word "Alien"?

"PROPSUMMIT.COM - THE ART OF ALIEN AND BLADE RUNNER"

Yeah...oldzey is right; it's not only about BR anymore. Maybe it's time to change the ol' logo? (or at least the text ).

....change is good and always painful....it's been interesting watching the Alien related "stuff" accelerate on this web site....the slow building interest has given way to some truly interesting props and projects....not my cup of tea but fun to read and fun to track...
...this has been and will probably always be a "Blade Runner" site....that includes Alien related stuff.....much the way RPF which appears to have started it's life as a purely Star Wars site now includes the best information on Battlestar Galactica props on the web...
...one mans opioion....as smelly as it may be....

It would be cool if someone started an all ALIEN site, its getting crowded here for BR fans probably, I can understand why many would get turned off by all of us newbies.

Thing is, there's so much cross over between the two films. Most of the BR graphics and more than a few sound FX appear in BR. I see no reason to split the house in this case. At the moment Alien is up on the posts, but who knows what prop is gonna pop up tomorrow to put BR back up on the list, its a dynamic environment.
