Steve, thanks for the info on Kane's patches not being stitched along the bottom. Thought that was the case but good to get confirmation from folks who've seen the actual jacket.

cheers

A very interesting analysis about the crew uniforms design here :

How could they have not mentioned that the costume designer for the uniforms was John Mollo from Star Wars? Smile Great article. It made me see some things I had only just glimmered, but never fully thought of.

"But director Ridley Scott and costume designer John Mollo (fresh off Star Wars) followed the cues in O’Bannon’s story that, like truckers, these guys want to feel comfortable on their long haul mission."

Interesting read for sure! Funny to think that there's only two people wearing the flight suit in the movie: Ripley and Ash.

Saw this thread, so I'm jumping in here late, with a question -

I too have one of the original Thinking Cap ALIEN baseball caps, with the contrasting stitching, their original NOSTROMO patch and the scrambled eggs - the latter of which seem to be fairly accurate to those in the movie.

The cap is intact, but whether my brain has grown, or I've just become thick-headed - either way, it no longer fits. I hate to cannibalize it, but I'd like to recreate it at a slightly larger scale. Not a problem, except I can't seem to find any source for accurate "scrambled eggs". All the gold leaves that I am finding at surplus and online seem to be more modernized, standardized versions none of which match.

Any help would be appreciated . . .

Thanks in advance - R13

What about finding a cheap period hat on ebay, and cutting off the embroidery? Something like this...

Brilliant! And "d'oh" Razz I tried military vendors, but they had more modern bullion threading; and mostly sold in bulk (as in enough for a ship complement....which I found very odd, as there are only so many Officers of Command level on a Navy ship).

When I was doing my Omega Man thing, I noticed that the real metal scrambled eggs from my genuine US Generals cap are probably the same ones used in the movie,
would explain why they are so hard to find and match up. Then I kept going with Omega Man and forgot about it.
I got this hat last year on ebay for under $10, might get another one day to finish off the Brett cap. Please let me know if this is wrong or has been posted previously.

Hi Tim, glad to see you back... and back with style !

What a great discovery you have shared here, I was on the hunt myself for similar stuff since I purchased an original "prototype" Nostromo cap from someone who was at Shepperton during the shooting of A L I E N. (will post info and pics about that one later, must do some homework before sharing it)

Looks like the scrambled eggs on your general hat are a very close match to the ones seen on screen, because of their design and texture and (maybe more important to my eyes) because they look glued to a peak made of black fabric... and that combination of scrambled eggs + black fabric underneath looks very close to what could be seen on a genuine production-made Nostromo cap sold at Propstore years ago ! (see page 5 of this thread for a photo of this cap)

Thanks again for sharing mate !

Fred

Thanks very much Fred, didnt really leave, just didnt want to flood the place with the non BR replicas.

Im trying to find somewhere that sells the metal scramble eggs by themselves so people, me included, dont have to buy and destroy a
whole hat for them, will post if something can be found, no way Im modifying Hestons cap. Cant wait to see the prototype.

...oh good, don't destroy that hat Tim (it's so beautiful and part of a good collection). Don't know if these are readily available as stand alone, but one can try

Totally agree with both of you, these general hats are great, finding a source only for the scrambled eggs would be great !

Having acquired several samples of oak leaves - from the common varieties to the NAPA cap mentioned here (which BTW appears to be embroidered into the cheap cardboard brim) - I have to agree with Fred's thought. It would be nice to find a source for the "eggs" alone to avoid buying yet another cap. That said, it raises a question -

If the eggs on the US General's cap are also affixed to the brim, just how best would you go about removing them, without damage. They appear to be rather thin and somehow melded into the brim. Offworld's cap looks like it has a (patent) leather brim. Others I've seen appear to be attached to some kind of fabric. I'd have no interest in keeping the cap, but it seems a shame to totally ruin it unnecessarily.

Offworld, have you tried removing them yet? Any thoughts? - R13

I believe the ones made of gold or silver thread are called "Bullion". There are new companies still making them with the metallic thread. Here is one on a quick search that looks close and may or may not be metallic... http://www.4armedforces.com/product/3003_9206/Army-Gold-Scrambled-Eggs-Pair-Patch.html

I wouldn't try to remove those. The glue they use is the same used by shoe-makers and having worked in the shoe industry for a number of years, I can tell you that it's a very good glue Exclamation Patent leather has less "pores" than regular leather and that's why they use that glue that is close to the "Shoe-Goo" adhesive brand and formula.

If you really want to remove then try WD-40, a Q-tip and a lot of patience.
It all depends if the adhesive used on the piece is before the '70s or after...pray for after 1972 Wink
