I've been going through the garage throwing out things in mass quantities today, but one object headed for the trashbag caught my attention. Modeled by my daughter, 'cause it's a little tight for my 7 3/8 hat size was this Army Air Force flight hat. I'd guess it's about a 7 1/4. This couldn't be what Gaff was wearing could it? It has large side holes (large black rubber on the outside with a smaller opening directly over the ear, cloth padded inside). I suppose the rubber side pieces were designed to hold some kind of comm headset. The under chin strap is cloth covered leather, and there are rows of metal snaps left and right.

Yep you have an AN-H-15 summer flight helmet. Unfortunately you have the wrong version for Gaff. Gaff's did not have the leather reinforcement in the snaps, and had one less snap on either side. The good news is that they were also used in SW Return of the Jedi, as part of the Endor troopers helmets. So they are very desirable none the less. They also sell pretty well at gun shows.

Nice find still. I wonder what other goodies ended in your trash today?

You can get around that problem, carefully remove the stitching from the leather reinforcement and the helmet underneath should be pristine.
Just cut out the snaps and reattach them to the helmet in the proper order, done.
You would think that the colour would be darker under the leather but it wont be, unless the cap has been damp for a long time etc.
They made these things pretty tough.
