Inspired by my new cibi doubles and my shot glasses I am planning another project (yeah, like I need another project!).

Where could I put my glass? Not just for display, you understand, but whilst guzzling <ahem> sorry, gently sipping, Scotland's finest export.

Somehow an ordinary drinks mat just doesn't seem right. I have some very nice Japanese mats with illustrations of geishas on them. Very nice but still not right.

Then I realised; make my own! So I started.

I need a good BR motif to put on each one. What could I possibly use from Blade Runner with a drinking theme.

Hmm.

Chew's place? No.
The Police Station? No.
The animal market? No.
The WHite Dragon? Well possibly.
The Snake Pit? Damn right!

So I started with the most important part.

The back of each mat is still in the planning stages. Johnny Walkers whisky? Tsao T'seng? Geisha popping pills?

I shall report back soon. Cool

Quick question; why is he almost always called "Taffey" when the script calls him "Taffy"?

IMDB has him as "Taffey" aswell. Not sure why it's different from the script though.

I think that is just how us Americans pronounce "Taffy" Smile

This is what I came up with for the front. I haven't decided whether to have a different graphic on the back.

I might do a run of these. I shall start an interest thred in the Prop SHop soon and see who's in.

(You might notice that I neatly side-steppe the Taffy/Taffey issue) Laughing

I presume from the shape of your artwork that a "drinks mat" is what Americans call a "coaster"?

Great idea, Kevin. And very nice work, too!

From what will they be made, and will they be "reusable"? Paper coasters tend to be spoiled by condensation dripping from the glasses of iced drinks. Some establishments use rubber, plastic, or plastic-coated paper so that coasters last longer.

Looking forward to your thread in the Prop Shop. Smile

Yes, a coaster. We call them that too. However, a beer mat is normally pressed pul board and a coaster is normally a bit more long term.

I was planning to have 1000 of these printed up double sided. They seem more like the sort of thing you'd find in a bar. Something high quality might find its way into the clientelle's pockets!

However, I suppose people might not want to buy a large number of something that's really for display.

I shall look into plastic coated and acrylic options.

I love the idea a lot. Though for some reason I like the simple one without the extra text the best...

It has all the dark seedy quality the bar has. Maybe the rest of the text more subtle and smaller?

Just my 2 cents...otherwise I would love a few of these. Smile

I plan to purchase some whichever way you decide to go. If you go with the simple, disposable paper type, I won't use them as practical coasters, but will instead preserve them for display. If you go with a more durable format, well, I can see myself sitting behind a Snake Pit coaster and tipping a few.

Another alternative might be to put the SNAKE PIT logo on one side of the coaster, and the text (perhaps with a suggestive illustration? Wink ) on the other.

I was going to try and do something with the Geisha from the adverts, but seeing the original large Snake Pit logo that Andy just showed has made me think again.

I might go with the plain front and the busy version on the back.

Looking back at the graphics section in the BR Sketcbook, it looks as though Tom had anticipated the grunge trend in graphics that we are currently surrounded by; distressed letters and busy, over-printed type. I was tempted to go with that look and feel.

However, I feel that Taff(e) Lewis would want his joint to look "classy" (or at least what passes for classy in his sweaty head).

Before making a final decision I shall look into what options are available for having these produced.

Thanks for all the input.

Just waiting you Kevin... The clean Andy version is lovable too. But, I'm sure each one of us will have one version at least! XD

Thanks Juan.
If I go with the pulp board version, everyone will have about 50, I think!

If I've got 50... maybe I'll use some, even if they're pulp!
