Okay had another look.
Here is the wide shot.
The close up was of the bird with it's back to us. Now I said I thought there was text on the other. That was due to my wife's second opinion. Now we looked again and it looked liked it could be the same thing, which would make sense.
As for different lengths of beaks and feathers that was hard to tell also. Again difference of opinion with my wife. The whole sequence is quite short and split by Ridley giving an explanation of how it was going to be used.
Hope this helps!
Might be able to get a translation if it is Japanese. Anybody else have any ideas?

You could be right after all... They're identical in shape, so why should they have something different written on their hats ?
Good deduction !

Look here :
See ?
The beaks are different... and I found 2 vintage birds with different beak shapes by accident on eBay when I started this project...

I'll ask one of my friends who lives in Japan... but I'm not even sure it's Kanji... Maybe too many lines ?

OK, got the translation from my japanese speaking friend...
Here is what she told me :
Quote: |
幸
sinogram used in Chinese, Japanese and even Korean, meaning "good fortune, happiness, happily" in 3 languages. (But on the hat, it is upside down !)
福
Another sinogram used in Chinese, which also means "good fortune, happiness. Happiness is often written backwards (custom after a Chinese legend), but this is not the one on the picture.
|
The upside down Sinogram for GOOD FORTUNE could be :
1
A mistake from one of the prop guys.
2
A bad omen for the Nostromo crew.
Interesting, ins't it ?

Fred,
That is interesting. Maybe they liked the Sinogram upside down visually, or like you say it just got put on upside down. The shot was to be used right at the end of the MU TH ER computer countdown to self destruct.

Well, well, well...talk about bad omen for the crew and the ship
Unless, as Fred mentioned, an honest mistake... |

They look great Fred.
Must have a go at mine soon.
Did you super glue the feathers, epoxy or PVA them?

Thanks Colin !
I superglued them... and I still remember this moment to this day :

You can't imagine the nightmare it was to glue those blue feathers on the birds' bottoms (3 per bird, 1 tall in the middle + 2 small on the sides).
I ended with superglue and feathers parts on all my fingers... I was looking like a a kind of mad "Muppet ripper" !!!
Damn prop addiction...
Fred |
(This to say... Watch your fingers when you glue everything in place !!!)

I´m quite sure that these little bouncy things (Ripleys, not Lamberts):
are danish Hoptimist:

They have been reissued and are available again. |

WOW, thanks a lot JBM for posting this !
I always thought they were scratch-built or at least modified toys, like the drinking birds... Who would have imagined...
Thanks again... and WELCOME, by the way !

Youre welcome! I´m glad to be able to contribute. I have learned a lot reading topics here and I like that the members share and help each other.
I´m just wondering how semi-unknown 1970és danish green/blue bouncy things ended up on Nostromo...

I have had these before, and still have an empty box for one somewhere. If I can find it I can at least find out the maker for them.

Dont know if they're widely available outside Denmark, but here they are plentiful. |
