Sweet little one minute prop conversion BrownC, love it !
OK guys, back to the drinking birds for a minute because... I recently bought and viewed the A L I E N BlueRay and... Spotted this on one of the damn birds :
So it looks like the kanjis were different on both birds after all... I asked my japanese speaking friend and here is what she told me after a few days :
There's a kanji with a key similar to the one seen on the bird that says "Chance, fortune, hazard" :
運
More interesting, this kanji is often used with the kanji seen on the other bird :
幸
In this case, the combination of sinograms means "happyness, chance, prosperity" !
幸運
In japanese : kôun.
I'm convinced she's right, so I'm going to modify one of my destruction birds accordingly... Pics soon !

Absolutely right JB !
Colin, I couldn't agree more ! Can't believe the time spent on these birds, the first post of this thread is 3 years old !
(Would have loved to have as much fun with the BALAJI pack of cigarettes but alas this one is far more tricky...)

OK, as promised, the final version of birds (with correct kanjis on both hats) in all their stupid and furry glory !
Since this project is completed at last, I began work on the next one :
RIPLEY'S COCKPIT GASHAPONS
As we already know, there are 4 of them.
I thought the big one with hat was purple but after studying all the photos I have here and there in my archives I had to reconsider my thoughts... It's not purple, it's blue actually ! (and with tall legs, not short ones)
I have spent the last weeks working on it, even have nicknamed this thing "Ripley's Smurf" ! I'll have to weather it, it'll be done later when all 4 will be complete. The little green frog was an unaltered Hoptimist, this one's easy, but the next one (the big green frog) will be a little more tricky... but I already have nicknamed it "Groucho Marx", you'll understand why next time...
OK, time for pics of the aforementioned Smurf... Enjoy !

Blue! Long legs! Oh well I'm sure I can find a home elsewhere for my purple Hoptomist Bimble.
Nice work Fred. Enjoying the finished birds and that hat. Can't wait for the next instalment.

Thank you everybody for the kind words !
Regarding my progress on the next Hoptimist... Well, I'm still in the middle of an intense sanding session ! I'll need more time than first expected to post new pics...
This to say, stay tuned, more soon... (OK, it's sanding time again... Meh...)

OK guys, way time for an update on the 3rd gashapon...
I realized a long time ago that the regular Hoptimist head on that one had been replaced by... a rice / miso soup bowl !
It's obvious on the photos posted in the first page of this thread ages ago... and also on the ones below. See that flat section on the top of its head ? It's a (sanded / reduced in height) bowl base :
I have found one melamine bowl in the UK months ago, but after intense sanding sessions (It really was a long and painful work to achieve) I had to finally admit its diameter was too large for my replica... It's almost 11cms when it would need to be 10cms to fit the base of the Hoptimist...
Gosh...
All this work for nothing...
OK, so I'm currenty looking for a melamine bowl with a diameter of (roughly) 10cms / 4", if any of you mates would have any idea where I could find one that would be great, many thanks in advance for your help ! (I already have browsed eBay and other places without luck so far)

Yep, he's blind Did you try to find regular plastic sphere, or does it have to be melamine? |

Sorry JB but if I want to be screen accurate it has to be made from a rice / miso bowl, and these are usually made with melamine... (and then I'll add color and eyes, yes)
