Hi Guys,

I am in the middle of building up a metal Sidkit Worldcon blaster and have gone a little bit heavy handed with the spray primer and black top coat on one part (the cover where the 5 LEd's are housed)! Can anyone please recommend a safe way to remove the paint, back to the bare metal, so I can do this part again? I obviously don't want to damage the metal in the process plus the lettering is on their too and I don't want to end up accidentally rubbing that away!

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Paul.

Since Sidkit's are mainly Pewter , too stong a remover will pit and potentially damage the metal , acetone and or brake fluid applied with a cloth should remove the paint, dampen a cloth well with the remover use a 'wipe on - leave for a few moments - wipe off' technique and rinse well with soapy water between applications - with care all the paint will come off - use a pair of old toothbrushes for the lettering - and use the same process repeat until back to metal , final rinse warm soapy water , air dry , use car body white or grey primer - white is better for obvious reasons - lightly coat , let dry at least half an hour apply repeated light coats of final colour until covered leave to dry in a dust free area.

Good luck !!

Hey Paul --

Actually when I was building my Sid, I was initially very unhappy with the paint finish on my steel magazine. I had primed it with heavy-duty engine primer and then painted over it with satin black paint but ultimately, I decided I wanted a slightly different finish so I was also faced with a clean-up. Because the paint had not been on for a very long time, I simply placed the entire magazine housing into a tub of mineral turpentine and after leaving it there for a while (I can't recall exactly how long) I took it out and scrubbed it clean with an old toothbrush.

The parts came clean without any hassle at all - aside from a little elbow grease - and a good scrub in a basin of warm soapy water before being prepped in the usual way got the parts ready for repainting.

It is advisable to avoid really strong cleaners and I found that provided the paint job was not old and hard, turpentine worked for me..

Best of luck mate.

Hi Staar,

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it! I have also seen the photos on your site about your sidkit build up and it looks great! If I can get mine looking half as good as the one you did I will be happy with that!

Also your reply, and posting of a free paper prop, to my request on here for a Deckard ID card wins you another big thumbs up from me mate!!

Regards

Paul.

Aircraft stripper also works but is very toxic. It will not harm the metal. And it will remove ALL of the paint

Hi Guys,

I can confirm that if you want to take the paint off of a metal sidkit with minimum effort and to absolutely no detriment to the metal finish then use neat acetone as advised by Johnny in response to my original post! In about 10 minutes I was back to where I started! Just remember to wash thoroughly in warm soapy water and air dry afterwards!

Thanks for all the replies..............much appreciated as always!!

Regards

Paul.
